  The LaMetroMole with LACMTA Comments
The LACMTA are probably looking forward to being named “America's Best” for their “economy”, in 2075 or whenever they complete the “Subway to the Sea”.
In this case the LACMTA is wishing and hoping that spending $1.3 billion on a “transit-orienting” apartment/retail/office tower will cause Los Angelinos to abandon their cars in favor of public transportation.
Fortunately, the LACMTA are only giving away $450 million which is equal to the $1.25 fares of 360 million passengers or 25% of the 1.8 ten year projection of budget shortfall.

The fact that the LACMTA owns the former Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way reduces the gap between approval and groundbreaking.
In addition, another possible extension of the Orange Line often proposed by transit advocates is an extension from North Hollywood station to Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, which would approximately go up Vineland Avenue and Vanowen Street to the airport, to connect with the Metrolink station.

In early 2006, LACMTA has hinted that the Red Line will receive one further extension.
Both eastward expansion or expansion in the Valley seem to be all but completely ruled out, due to the expansions of the Gold Line and Orange Line already operating in those areas.
On March 16, 2006, the LACMTA board recommended that the Red Line branch running between Union Station and Wilshire/Western should be renamed the Metro Purple Line to distinguish it from the Union Station - North Hollywood Red Line.

Meantime, LACMTA is expecting more money from California Gov. Gray Davis's budget that would cover much of the extra capital cost of CNG buses.

Abstract: This project is a cooperative attempt by the FTA, DHHS, Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA), and the California State Medicaid Authority to broaden the coordination of public transit and human services transportation.
LACMTA and MTC of the Bay Area will use the service structures developed by public transit operators to provide cost effective services for elderly persons and persons with disabilities to improve the cost-effectiveness of the Medicaid non-emergency transportation program, and will use the savings achieved to provide more service to meet demand.
Ultimately, this project will successfully demonstrate the combining of Federal US DOT and Medicaid funds with state and local funds to establish an integrated brokered transportation service for elderly persons and persons with disabilities in order to establish a model for other DHHS-funded programs.
