SR-71-LASRE EC97-44205-5: LASRE pod being mated to SR-71
The LASRE experiment was designed to provide in-flight data to help Lockheed Martin evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics and the handling of the SR-71 linear aerospike experiment configuration.
Two initial flights were used to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of the LASRE apparatus (pod) on the back of the SR-71.
It was rotated 90 degrees and equipped with eight thrust cells of an aerospike engine and was mounted on a housing known as the "canoe," which contained the gaseous hydrogen, helium, and instrumentation gear.

Experiment on Reducing Drag on an Aerospace Launch Vehicle
It was intended that the LASRE flight-test data would be used to define the aerospike-engine performance under realistic flight conditions and to determine interactions of the engine plume with the base and engine cowl areas.
Baseline drag measurements on the LASRE configuration demonstrated a large transonic-drag rise that is significantly larger than the wind-tunnel value predicted for the X-33.
With increasing mach number in the subsonic flight regime, base drag (referenced to the LASRE base area) was found to be relatively constant at a base-drag coefficient of approximately 0.38 until the divergence-drag-rise mach number of approximately 0.90 is reached.

Inexpensive, Rugged Oxygen Sensors Qualified for Flight
However, because of the criticality of these sensors, it was decided that in the LASRE project, each such sensor will be replaced when its response deteriorates or it reaches a calendar life of 1.5 years.
Twelve of the sensors and their respective thermal controllers were integrated into the LASRE flight-test fixture and were flight-tested out to a speed of mach 1.6 and an altitude of 52 kft (16 km).
They are being calibrated in much the same manner as in the LASRE program, but dynamic-response and sensor-recovery tests will be performed in addition, for comparison with results of tests in the boost and free phases of the flight of the Hyper-X. Figure 1.

 Aerospike Tests Completed For LASRE
Washington - November 29, 1998 - NASA and Lockheed Martin officials have announced conclusion of the flight operations phase of the Linear Aerospike SR-71 Experiment (LASRE).
Five follow-on flights focused on the experiment; two were used to cycle gaseous helium and liquid nitrogen through the experiment to check its plumbing system for leaks and to check engine operation characteristics; and three were used to cycle liquid oxygen through the engine.
In addition to refining and enhancing confidence in predictive tools that will be used in finalizing the design of VentureStarTM, Rising said that LASRE has amassed a wealth of information on how to get reusable launch vehicle hardware ready for flight and to keep it flying.

Method for reducing the drag of blunt-based vehicles by adaptively increasing forebody roughness - Patent 6892989
As the forebody drag is increased, the boundary layer thickens at the aft end of the forebody thereby reducing the effectiveness of the pumping mechanism and resulting in reduced base drag.
Because the LASRE drag data lie on the steep, nearly vertical, portion of the curve, a result of the large base drag, a small increment in the forebody friction drag should result in a relatively large decrease in the base drag.
In order to predict the expected magnitudes of these drag reductions, a mathematical model of the LASRE base drag coefficient, which has the viscous forebody drag coefficient as a parameter was developed.
