LCD shutter glasses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
LCD shutter glasses are glasses used in conjunction with computers to create the illusion of a three dimensional image, an example of stereoscopy.
Glass containing liquid crystal and a polarizing filter has the property that it becomes dark when voltage is applied, but otherwise is translucent.
A pair of eyeglasses can be made using this material and connected to a computer video card.

 STEREO VIDEO | Display Adapters
Shutter glasses such as the ones used in this project have a small circuit that generates an AC signal that powers the LCD panels in the glasses.
The output of the shutter control circuit is sent to a DB-25 connector that mates to the one on the McNaughton shutter adapter (which generates the AC signal needed to operate the shutter glasses).
The electronics required by the shutter glasses is minimal - usually just an oscillator that generates the AC signal for the glasses, and a left/right control generated by the incoming interlace signal.

Even if the LCD shutters were absolutely perfect and did not allow any light through when blocking out the appropriate image to the appropriate eye, when the shutter opens to show the successive image, there is still a dim image retained from the previous eye-image by the monitor's phosphor.
For example, if polarized glassed are to be used to view the 3-D images, the creation of the source images will comprise sending the source images to two projectors and filtering the projected images with two complementary polarized filter.
It is the responsibility of the shutter glasses to correctly modulate the opening and closing of the shutters so that the left source image is only visible to the left eye through the left eye lens of the glasses.

HOW SHUTTER GLASSES WORK   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
What is really going on is the glasses lenses are made up of a clear LCD panel that can either pass your vision on or off for each lens.
The 3D video signal is usually viewed while wearing a pair of LCD shutter glasses which only allow the left eye to see left images and the right eye to see right images.
It is not possible to sync the shuttering of the glasses to a television that refreshes at a random rate.

About the CAVE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Infrared Crystal Eyes active stereo LCD shutter glasses are used in conjunction with the projectors to provide true stereo at an ideal rate of sixty frames per second (thirty frames per second for each eye), however, this frame rate varies greatly with each individual application.
The special glasses that you wear in the CAVE are actually shutter glasses that make the right lens become opaque when the image for the left eye is being displayed and vice-versa, so that each eye only sees the image designed for it.
The tracked glasses are identical to the rest of the shutter glasses used in the CAVE except that they have a wire attached to them that is attached to the Tracker Control Unit.

I have a set of wireless 3D glasses (they are battery powered and controlled via an IR unit that is hooked to a dongle that sits between the video card and the monitor input).
The new glasses invert the parallax of 3D objects so that 2D overlays (which don't move) appear to have the largest parallax, and hence float in FRONT of rather than behind the scenery.
I too have a set of LCD shutter glasses that work with my nVidea card- I was using them to play Kingpin when I downloaded and ran one of the demos in the library here, and forgot I had the glasses enabled.

 Shutterglass Viewing
LCD shutter glasses alternately block out light coming to the left and right eyes.
The shutters are synchronized (by a wire or an IR signal) with the sequential presentation of the left and right images to the monitor by your graphics board.
Most shutter glasses come with software to perform the decomposition of a left-right stereo-jpeg (.jps) pair into the two pages that are subsequently flipped by your graphics adapter.

Stereoscopic LCD shutter glass driver system (US6529175)
A stable, predictable field ID signal is produced by the flip flop whose two complimentary outputs act as inputs to a second flip flop chip which produces the drive signals for the LCD shutter glasses.
A third flip flop produces a LCD "common" signal that is sent to both LCD shutters.
A field swap between the two shutters is implemented with a switch located at the output of the third flip flop.

In the LCD shutter glass 3D display, the left and right images are alternated rapidly on the monitor screen.
The most common way to connect the glasses is that the LC shutter glasses are wired to a controller which is connected to video source what you want to watch (usually computer or VCR).
The LCD panels in front of both eyes are controlled so that one eye sees one screen image and the other eye sees the second image etc. With normal TV it was possible to show 25 or 30 images per second (depending on TV standard used) to both eyes.

While VGA LCD monitors are still readily available, most new video cards and LCD monitors are talking to each other via DVI-D, and eDimensional's stuff doesn't grok DVI-D. After "downgrading" my cable setup on my Dell 2001FP, I was able to get the eDimensional glasses working on it, but the effect wasn't very good.
The other problem is that LCD monitors don't work at very high refresh rates compared to newer CRT monitors, so I got loads of blinking and ghosting.

First, shutter glasses have some delay between the change of signal and the actual switching of the glasses.
When using the glasses, adjusting the pot will allow you to see a fl bar that indicates the LCD shutter switching between the two frames.
When that happens, the both LCD shutters are enabled, and the pot should be backed off until it is evident (from the flicker) that the shutters are again being operated.

When I held the glasses up to a mirror and looked through one lens, I shouldn't have been able to see anything through the other lens reflected in the mirror, since whenever the lens I was looking through was clear, the other one should have been opaque.
Cheap 3D glasses like the VR100 set do their magic by means of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) shutters, which let only one eye see your monitor at a time, and flicker very rapidly so you get the illusion of a continuous image.
The glasses synchronise to the monitor's screen refresh rate, so each eye is uncovered when the monitor's showing the image that eye should see.

With CPU speeds of modern PDAs at a blazing 400MHz and rising, I think it could be feasable for a PocketPC device to produce 2 graphic perspectives instead of one; and it's not hard to drive a set of LCD shutter glasses.
And: The LCD screen used by the iPAQ and other displays doesn't refresh quickly enough to implement frame-sequential stereo vision with LCD shutter glasses, so it wouldn't work anyway.
And you have a point in that the LCD display could be a problem; not as much in the refresh rate, which I think is do-able, but in the image latency problems that LCD displays have.

Even the cheap glasses used in some of the consumer LCD shutter glasses systems are able to avoid this problem.
Perhaps this is due to varying print density in the negatives or prints, shutter variations in the projectors or cameras or optical printers, or even variations in the LCD shutters, or a combination of them all.

The basic idea is to alternately open the left and right shutter of the lcd glasses as the display quickly alternates between the left and right views of a stereo image.
The main issue is the extinction rate of the lcd panels, as well as the transmission rate once the lenses are closed.
Whether you use a monochrome or color monitor, be aware that the light emissions from different phosphors decay at different rates, and that even a white "monochrome" phosphor at the microscopic level is actually a mixture of several different phosphors with different dominant wavelengths and decay rates.

The trouble with the VRJoy, and with all LCD shutterglasses, is that it's not possible to prevent each eye from seeing, at least dimly, the other eye's image.
