		LDC III, the Third United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, the first UN conference to be hosted by the European Union, was held one year ago (14 - 20 May, 2001) at the European Parliament in Brussels.

		Until the formation of the LDC, Coast Guardsmen attended the Navy Chief Warrant Officer Indoctrination School at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. In November 1997, a Coast Guard-specific CWO pilot course was held at the Academy, laying a foundation for the new LDC (see story on page 7).
		Now that people are hearing about the benefits of the LDC at the Academy and the increased benefits of the Academy combined with the LDC to the Coast Guard overall, the support has been outstanding.
		Also, we expect each student graduating from an LDC school to return to their unit with a wealth of information and tools which will help cultivate the development of Coast Guard personnel and, subsequently, the performance of the organization.

	Ivanhoe Elementary LDC Minutes
		Past LDC meetings have gone on past 11PM because the LDC meeting time was used to explore all aspects of a problem or issue, give the community a chance to be heard, or come up with a solution.
		Spencer SooHoo pointed out that the LDC meeting is the only regularly scheduled meeting where people have a chance to make their views heard, raise issues, share information, etc. and it serves as a useful mechanism for generating a sense of community.
		One variation was to have the LDC meetings only on an as-needed basis, but others pointed out that without a periodic meeting, it would be difficult to know when a meeting was needed.
