LGBT (or GLBT) is an abbreviation used as a collective term to refer to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people.
LGBT became increasingly common from the mid 1990s and as of 2005, LGBT has become so mainstream that it has been adopted by the majority of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community centers and the gay press in most English-speaking countries.
A reverse to the above situations is evident in the belief of 'lesbian and gay separatism' (not to be confused with the related, Lesbian Separatism) which holds that Lesbians and Gay men form (or should form) a community distinct and separate from other groups normally included in the LGBTQ sphere.

 Mosse LGBT History
George Mosse was a pioneer in the study of gender and sexuality, and a strong supporter of academic initiatives to include the study of LGBT history in the curriculum.
In 1983, he gave the keynote address at a groundbreaking conference on LGBT studies at the University of Amsterdam, and in 1988, was appointed a visiting professor of LGBT studies at Amsterdam where he endowed a foundation to promote the study of LGBT history.
Gay history can not only tell were Gays stand in the fabric of society itself, what role they play in society's self image, but it can also highlight the obstacles which we have to overcome, the factors which make prejudice so effective and long lasting.

 History of Gay and Lesbian Life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
The beginning of the History Project goes back many years by individual efforts of a great many people in storing documents and memorabilia of LGBT life in the Milwaukee area, whether it be social life, businesses (bars, restaurants, etc.), or groups such as PrideFest and the Community Center.
Much of the impetus for the current effort stems from the knowledge that a large amount of the most important material relating to gay and lesbian history may be on the verge of destruction at the hands of people unaware of its value to us as a community.
The people who created and led the earliest organizations and businesses are reaching the ends of their lives (someone who was 35 when Stonewall occurred in 1969 would be almost 70 years old when this project became an organization in 2003).

 Project to gather History of LGBT Life in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
At PrideFest 2005, the Project decided to display a Timeline, depicting some key events in Milwaukee's LGBT history since Stonewall, and giving visitors the opportunity to participatye by writing in their own memories, recollections, and events they wanted to be remembered.
In trying to identify key individuals to interview for the Oral History project, it quickly became obvious that even the most carefully chosen choices would fill only a small gap- and that is was important for the interview process to continue indefinitely.
In addition, it was discussed how so much of the history- artifacts- were disappearing as people moved, died, etc. After some discussions with the History Project, the UWM Library- Archives Department has agreed to be the permanent repository for preserving archives and memorabilia collected for the Project.

The event was to encourage a diverse range of services and organisations to have a stall where members of the LGBT communities (and their friends) could interact, pick up information and engage with services in the area.
As the history month was approaching I thought I would contact the multi screen cinemas in the area to see if they would be interested in showing a film as part of the month.

History could soon become more complete, as a new group could be added to the books — pending a decision by the state Senate.
Though it is always preferred for social change to be initiated by the people, rather than mandated by the state, curriculum guidelines already exist and efforts to make them more inclusive should not be pushed to the wayside.
They contend that the bill is the result of the LGBT community pushing their agenda, rather than the need for a more honest portrayal of American history.
