LIGO stands for Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory; whose mission is to observe the theoretical gravitational waves of cosmic origin.
LIGO will search for gravitational waves that are theoretically created in supernova collapses of stellar cores (which form neutron stars and fl holes), collisions and coalescences of neutron stars or fl holes, rotations of neutron stars with deformed crusts and the remnants of gravitational radiation created by the birth of the universe.
LIGO is a joint project between scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

See list of astronomical topics for a more exhaustive list of astronomy-related pages.
In astronomy, the main way of obtaining information is through the detection and analysis of electromagnetic radiation, photons, but we also receive information from outside the earth carried by cosmic rays, neutrinos, and, in the near future, gravitational waves (see LIGO and LISA[?]).
A traditional division of astronomy is given by the region of the electromagnetic spectrum observed:
