Long Island Railroad - LIRR schedule, times, information, delays Long Island, NY
The LIRR's history stretches back to 1832 and the Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad, which built a ten mile (16 km) stretch of track between Brooklyn and Jamaica.
The LIRR thus built its original tracks running straight down the middle of the island, which was largely uninhabited at the time, rather than serving the existing Long Island communities.
In 1876, the LIRR was bought out by the owner of one of the competing roads, but the Long Island Rail Road name was used for the merged company.

Trimming the LIRR from its system did not provide the relief the PRR sought and, on February 1, 1968 the PRR merged with the New York Central Railroad to form the Pennsylvania New York Central Transportation Company, popularly known as the Penn Central.
In 1966 the State of New York purchased the LIRR from the PRR by acquisition of all of its capital stock, though the PRR continued management until, in 1968, the LIRR was handed over to the newly formed Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Authority (MCTA) to oversee its operation.
LIRR still uses a small portion of this line, east of Hempstead, as a place to store equipment, and each year the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus train uses this Garden City Secondary to reach the Nassau Coliseum.

LIRR 508 was to be moved “dead in tow” (unpowered) in the middle of a group of three locomotives.
Locomotives LIRR 160 and LIRR 164 were to be the lead and trailing locomotives of the three-locomotive train, depending on the train’s direction of movement.
Because LIRR 508 was a different type of locomotive, (5) the usual electrical cable connections between the locomotives could not be made.

But I know what those LIRR engineers would look for because I spend time with them and I know I want to be able to afford to get out of the cold when I retire (which should be in about thirty years at the rate I'm going).
I think the LIRR engineers and conductors have the best salary package out of all of the MTA operating units but no one at the MTA is going to retire to the poorhouse.
LIRR engineers are one of the last fanatical union groups in the world and regularly hold commuters hostage.

LIRR states that Lloyd chooses and supplies all personnel, is responsible for hiring new employees, and retains control over employee schedules, wages, benefits, discipline, and training.
LIRR also contends the ruling on this accretion application should be stayed until the grievance filed by IRSA claiming that LIRR violated the collective bargaining agreement by contracting out the temperature survey work to Lloyd is ruled on by an arbitrator.
LIRR claims the issue is a minor dispute under the RLA and, therefore, the representation matter should be delayed pending arbitration.

 LIRR Lightweight Parlor Cars
As the 1970s reach their midpoint, LIRR rebuilds 11 of their own lightweight electric MU coaches into parlor cars capable of operating with the railroad's push-pull fleet.
In 1989, one of these 11 rebuilt cars is given it's own diesel generator, providing "dual mode" capability; another LIRR coach is rebuilt as a parlor car with it's own diesel generator, expanding the Sunrise Fleet of parlor cars to a total of twelve cars.
It is discontinued at the turn of the century, when the LIRR replaces their small fleet of parlor cars (and larger fleet of diesel hauled coaches) with new multilevel coaches and cab-control coaches.

The LIRR then decided to abandon their lease of the Brooklyn and Jamaica and to build their own trackage to a different point on the East River.
In 1875 the LIRR resumed operation on Atlantic Avenue, but going only as far as Flatbush Avenue, under terms of a new agreement with a Brooklyn and Jamaica successor.

Rebuilt lightweight parlor cars: LIRR rebuilt these 12 cars, known as The Sunrise Fleet, from their own lightweight coaches, to be compatible with their "push-pull" operations.
After all, LIRR retired the heavyweight cars three decades ago and retired the lightweight cars that replaced them about a quarter-century ago; the majority of them have probably long since been cut up by a scrapper and their steel recycled into new uses.

Frankly, all of the trains we saw on the LIRR looked the worse for wear.
All three dieselized trains that came while we were there showed a lot of wear, flaking paint and a coat of grime unusual even by New York standards.
We noticed that the LIRR's standard dieselized train has a powered locomotive at the East end; on the West is a non-powered control cab unit whose power plant has been replaced by a generator for heating and lighting cars
