The Royal Scot is a named passenger train that runs between London Euston and Glasgow, the length of the WCML with previously a portion also going to Edinburgh.
Early on this would probably be a LNWR Precursur Class but when these were obviously obsolete for express workings by 1928 they were replaced by the new LMS Royal Scot Class, and then pacifics of the LMS Princess Royal Class and LMS Princess Coronation Class.

 The Princess Royal Class
Although the "Royal Scot" class locomotives were capable of putting in good performances on the Euston-Glasgow run, they did have a few design flaws that affected performance after 6 or 7 hours of continuous running.
The LMS eventually built 12 of these locomotives (with 6202 "Turbomotive being rebuilt as a standard "Princess Royal" by British Railways in 1952).
It is interesting to note that smoke deflectors were never added to the class, as visibility was never a concern (unlike most of the other LMS express locomotive designs).

It should be noted that some sources incorrectly state that the term Pacific stems from early examples of the 4-6-2 type of locomotive being built for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
The largest user was the Pennsylvania Railroad, which had a total of 697 Pacifics, including 425 class K4s, the largest single class of locomotive ever built in the United States (they claimed worldwide, but this is unlikely to be true given huge fleets of identical German, Russian, and Chinese locomotives).
The LMS Princess Royal Class was also used as the basis for an unusual experimental locomotive, The Turbomotive.

 The 7P "Princess Coronation" class
Although the "Princess Royal" class was a vast leap forward in LMS motive power, improved services by the LNER to Scotland and the fashion for streamlined locomotive design in the mid-1930's meant that the LMS needed something to top the "Princess Royal" class.
The effects of the streamline casing are debatable, but it is generally accepted that the increased performance generated by the casing was usually offset by its weight, and only became an advantage on high-speed, non-stop runs.
The class was withdrawn between 1962 and 1964.

Locomotive repairs were greatly reorganized on the LMS, partly by the concentration of facilities (the article notes which works were closed and when) and improved methods were introduced to reduce the length of time in which locomotives were out-of-service.

The new West Shed extension of the Princess Royal Locomotive trust was officially opened on October 19th by HRH the Duke of Gloucester.
Originally built in the mid 1990s it was expected to serve the Trust’s needs for many years, but the acquisition of Duchess of Sutherland and LMS Saloon No. 6320 meant it was unable to house the whole collection of documents and other historic items.
Thanks to a substantial HLF grant it was decided to not only extend the side and back of the shed for a new work shop and wheel drop facilities, but to use some of the now freed space to tell the story of the LMS Princess Royal and Coronation class steam locomotives.
