Number 4468 Mallard is a London and North Eastern Railway Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built at Doncaster, England in 1938.
Mallard is the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph (203 km/h).
Mallard was the perfect vehicle for such an endeavour; one of the A4 class of streamlined locomotives designed for sustained 100+ mph (160 km/h) running, it was one of a small number equipped with a double chimney and double Kylchap blastpipe, which made for improved draughting and better exhaust flow at speed.

It is not well known that Mallard, the fastest steam locomotive in the world, once visited Burbage's Savernake Low Level station.
LNER number 4468 (later number 22 then finally, under BR, number 60022) set the record of 126 m.p.h.
Far from its usual East Coast Mainline route, Mallard had been hauling a train from Penzance to London Paddington when it developed a mechanical fault and had to be shunted in to the sidings at the old GWR Savernake Low Level while emergency repairs were done.

The A4’s were developed as part of the race to the north that the LNER was competing in against the LMS, both companies wanting to gain the fastest speed/journey time to Scotland.
The first four of the class were introduced to haul the LNER’s new service which used silver liveried specially designed streamlined coaches the train being named ‘Silver Jubilee’, after the coronation celebration of 1935, running from London to Newcastle.
The first engine to be rolled out of Doncaster works was LNER No.2509 ‘Silver Link’, having been given priority construction at the works and rolled out in the September the order only having been placed in the March of that year.

The ‘Mallard’ was built in 1937 at a cost of 8,500 (Pounds Stirling) and remained in service until 1963.
The A4 class was developed for high speed passenger transport along the East Coast Mainline London-Edinburgh route, as a rival project to the LMS Silver Link which operated through the Midlands from London to Glasgow.
Developed in a series of wind tunnel tests, the body evolved to minimise aerodynamic drag, but also featured depressions around the chimney to cause an effect to ensure clearance of the smoke away from the drivers view.
