The LNER, as its name suggests, covered the arc of the country between North and East of London.
The public face of a railway system was and is in large part the locomotives and rolling stock in service upon it, and therefore the personalities of the Chief Mechanical Engineers of the LNER impressed their distinctive visions upon the railway.
Sir Nigel Gresley was the first CME and held the post for the greatest proportion of the LNER's life, and thus he had the greatest effect on the company.

Sir Nigel Gresley introduced the famous A4 class locomotive in 1935 to pull a new train called the Silver Jubilee, between London King's Cross and Newcastle, in celebration of King George V's 25th year of reign.
The A4 pacifics were designed for low consumption of coal and water on all kinds of services; passenger and freight.
The A4 class locomotives were known to train spotters as "streaks".

LNER A4 class 4468 Mallard in the news
London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) A4 class 4468 Mallard is an LNER A4 Pacific class steam locomotive built in the 1930s by the LNER and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in England.
It is notable that, unlike the world records for automobiles, there is no requirement for an average of two runs in both directions, and assistance from gradient or wind has always been acceptable in rail speed records.

Mallard is an LNER A4 Pacific class steam locomotive built in the 1930s by the LNER and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in England.
Gresley LNER A4 Pacific Mallard is the holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph (approx 202 km/h).
The record was achieved on July 3, 1938 on the slight downwards grade of Stoke Bank south of Grantham on the East Coast Main Line, and the highest speed was recorded at milepost 90¼, between the towns of Little Blytham and Essendine.

 4-6-4
The 4-6-4 is best seen as combining the basic nature of the 4-6-2 Pacific type with an improved boiler and larger firebox that required extra support at the rear of the locomotive.
The only 4-6-4 tender locomotive in Great Britain was LNER No. 10000, built in 1930 as an experimental high-pressure compound locomotive with an experimental water-tube boiler, and known as the "hush-hush" locomotive on account of the great secrecy with which it was built.
After its rebuild, the W1 was easily distinguishable from an A4 at a glance, without looking for the extra trailing wheels, by the fact that it was never named; it was therefore known to train spotters as "the no-name streak".

A3 LNER Pacific - The Flying Scotsman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The idea of a new Pacific class is reputed to owe much to Gresley's admiration for the design of the Pennsylvania Railroad Class `K4s' (another popular Aster model from the 1980's).
Although the 'K4s' was a two-cylinder express Pacific design with a Belpaire firebox, Gresley found much of interest in the layout and proportions of this classic American design.
The Pacific wheel configuration had been tried already in express design in the UK with the GWR's - 'The Great Bear' but Gresley was looking for something altogether more advanced than this singular concept.

 The A4 LOCOMOTIVE SOCIETY LIMITED
The nameplates were unveiled by William Whitelaw, the Chairman of the LNER, who also presented Sir Nigel Gresley with a miniature silver replica of the locomotive to commemorate the occasion.
During May 1966 the locomotive was purchased by the A4 Preservation Society for £4,500, the Society having raised the money by public appeal and from the proceeds of rail tours.
The Society decided that the locomotive should be restored in the Garter Blue livery in which it was painted originally, bearing its LNER number 4498 and with modifications that had been made over the years to improve the performance of A4s.

Number 4468 Mallard is a London and North Eastern Railway Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built in the 1930s by the LNER and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in England.
Other steam locomotives were probably capable of such speeds; the LNER's long, straight, slightly downhill raceway of Stoke Bank played as much of a part in the record as the locomotive or crew.
It is notable that, unlike world records for cars, there is no requirement for an average of two runs in both directions, and assistance from gradient or wind has always been acceptable in rail speed records.

Both clockwork and electric sets were available before the war and the couplings could not be uncoupled automatically.
Pre-war locomotives were limited to an LNER valanced A4 Pacific named ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ and an 0-6-2 tank engine that looked like an LNER Class N2 but which, in true Hornby tradition, was available in the liveries of the big four companies (with detail concessions to the GWR).
After the war, the Peco automatic coupling was adopted as standard and the buildings, when they reappeared, were diecast in aluminium.

Actually, this shows ex-LNER Class A4 Pacific No. 60009 "Union of South Africa", which had worked a railtour in the area.
These locomotives have strong connections to Ferryhill, for in the 1960s during the rise of Diesel locomotives British Railways (Scottish Region) surprisingly introduced a 3 hour Aberdeen-Glasgow service using Class A4 pacifics (supplemented by A3s and V2s..and vitually any other type of loco still in working order!).
These spectacular workings continued, not in the least bit helped by the complete disasters being experienced with their chosen successors the North British Type 2s (Class 21s), until 1967 or 1968.
