This class of locomotive was also noted for its streamlined design, which not only improved its aerodynamics, thus increasing its speed capabilities, but also created an updraught to lift smoke away from the driver's vision, a problem inherent in the earlier A3 design.
The A4 Class locomotives were known affectionately by train spotters as "streaks".
A4 No.4498 was the hundredth Gresley pacific to be built and someone had the idea of naming it after the designer himself, which was a nice gesture.

This device improved the free-steaming capabilities of the locomotives further, and the final three locomotives of the class (4901 Capercaillie, 4902 Seagull and 4903 Peregrine) were also fitted with the Kylchap exhaust from new, and eventually the rest of the class were fitted with it (by BR) in the late 1950s.

Science Fair Projects - LNER Class A4 4468 Mallard
Number 4468 Mallard is a London and North Eastern Railway Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built in the 1930s by the LNER and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in England.
Mallard was the perfect vehicle for such an endeavor; one of a class of streamlined locomotives designed for sustained 100+ mph (160 km/h) running, it was one of a small number equipped with a double chimney and double Kylchap blastpipe, which made for improved draughting and better exhaust flow at speed.
It is notable that, unlike the world records for automobiles, there is no requirement for an average of two runs in both directions, and assistance from gradient or wind has always been acceptable in rail speed records.

The Mallard was one of many Gresley Class A4 steam engines built by LNER in the 1930s for high speed passenger transport along the East Coast Mainline (London-Edingburgh) shown in blue on the map.
I believe that the Mallard was the first A4 fitted with Kylchap exhaust and had had about three months of service at the time of the speed run.
A large proportion of the Class A4 steam engines have been preserved by the Class A4 society and according to them are now in better condition than they ever were in the 1930s.

The LNER's Express Pacific designs were probably the most famous of the LNER locomotives.
The wedge-shaped streamlining on the A4 was inspired by a Bugatti rail-car which Gresley had observed in France.
The LNER only claimed a peak average of 125mph - so breaking the world record for steam traction held by the German State Railways (124.5mph) and the British record set by the LMS (114mph).

The nameplates were unveiled by William Whitelaw, the Chairman of the LNER, who also presented Sir Nigel Gresley with a miniature silver replica of the locomotive to commemorate the occasion.
During May 1966 the locomotive was purchased by the A4 Preservation Society for £4,500, the Society having raised the money by public appeal and from the proceeds of rail tours.
The Society decided that the locomotive should be restored in the Garter Blue livery in which it was painted originally, bearing its LNER number 4498 and with modifications that had been made over the years to improve the performance of A4s.

The A4’s were developed as part of the race to the north that the LNER was competing in against the LMS, both companies wanting to gain the fastest speed/journey time to Scotland.
The first of the class to be withdrawn from BR service was ‘Silver Link’ in the December of 1962.
Not all of the class were immediately withdrawn as some were sent north to Scotland where they handled services from Edinburgh to Aberdeen and on the Waverley route from Carlisle to Edinburgh.
