  Lol - Encyclopedia Dramatica
Lol, the most abused abbreviation on the internets.
The adjective decribing something as lol inducing is "lolificatious", or the more commonly accepted "funny".
There has been some debate as to who first coined this acronym but it was concluded that the phrase is not really that funny and, more importantly, no-one really cares.

The origin of LOL   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
LOL was first coined on a BBS called Viewline in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in the early-to-mid-80s.
Of course, LOL was introduce to this new group, who took to it quickly; I always emphasized (and still do) that it was meant to be used *only* if you truly Laughed Out Loud...
The "true" use of LOL has been tainted; people use it in the same way that *grin* or "hahahaha" might, but I guess this is the evolution of words and language.
