  LPAR Overview
Dynamic logical partitioning (LPAR) is a system architecture approach that promises to revolutionize corporate IT infrastructures by enabling the capability to virtualize hardware resources that can be shared by multiple independent operating environments.
LPAR on eServer i5 is supported by i5/OS and AIX 5L - IBM operating systems, and by the Linux operating system available from one or more Linux distributors.
These clients have taken advantage of LPAR to benefit from the growing industry trend and the desire to optimize IT investments and resource virtualization through consolidation of hardware, software, networks, data centers, and more importantly skills.

For AIX 5L Version 5.1, the number of LPARs larger than 16 GB is limited to two in a system with 64 GB of installed memory, because of the memory alignment in AIX 5L Version 5.1.
LPARs that are larger than 16 GB are aligned on a 16 GB boundary.
In this scenario, when the second LPAR is installed using all the internal SCSI devices, you must be careful to not override the disks of the first LPAR.

Eight of the 32GB nodes are partitioned into four 8-processor/8GB "virtual" (LPAR) nodes, for a total of 32 8-processor nodes.
As each node will have a maximum of two interfaces into the network when we install the Colony switch, the use of LPAR nodes will increase network bandwidth available to each processor in a partitioned p690 by a factor of four over that of a processor in an unpartitioned node.
The LPAR nodes partition memory as well as processors, and each runs its own OS, which also impacts memory usage.

Logical partitioning in the System p5 environment
Logical partitioning (LPAR) is the ability to logically slice up a single system's CPU, memory, and other resources to create multiple and separate servers.
Capped prohibits the LPAR from using more processing units than is currently allocated to it.
If an LPAR is allocated 1.5 processing units but the workload requires 2.2 units, the LPAR would not be allowed access to the additional units, even if they were available in the shared processor pool.

LPAR allows workloads from multiple systems to be consolidated to a single iSeries machine, thus significantly cutting IT costs while minimizing risk.
LPAR involves a single iSeries system’s resources (processors, memory, etc.) being divided to create multiple independent iSeries systems within the same system.
Each iSeries partition can then be used for different purposes, such as database operation or to separate test and production environments, and can communicate with the other partitions as if they were each in a separate machine.

Additionally, many companies are hesitant to allow their administrators to manually adjust their logical partitioning resource settings for fear of making a mistake and causing a disruption to a program, he says.
The utility is composed of two main components: LPAR Manager, which must run in the server's primary partition, and LPAR Explorer, the Java-based user interface where administrators can adjust how Robot/LPAR behaves.
