  What are motherboard form factors?
The third common form factor is the LPX form factor.
LPX form factors are used in desktop models where space is a concern.
The fourth common form factor is the NLX form factor.

 Motherboard Form Factors
Form factor is especially important if you build your own computer systems and need to ensure that you purchase the correct case and components.
Some of the problems with this form factor mainly arose from the physical size of the board, which is 12" wide, often causing the board to overlap with space required for the drive bays.
The LPX form factor is found in low-profile cases (desktop model as opposed to a tower or mini-tower) with a riser card arrangement for expansion cards where expansion boards run parallel to the motherboard.

LPX is like an older AT-version of the NLX form factor.
LPX, back in its day, was taken on by several manufacturers, and it was used pretty much up until the Pentium II days.
LPX riser cards had to meet certain electrical requirements, but beyond that, the arrangements of the various connectors varied from manufacturer to manufacturer.

ATX was developed as an evolution of the Baby AT form factor and was defined to address four areas of improvement: enhanced ease of use, better support for current and future I/O, better support for current and future processor technology, and reduced total system cost.
This form factor is basically the same as ATX with a smaller allowable board size.
LPX is an older form factor (8.67" x 9.25") that has been replaced by NLX.

There is a smaller LPX form factor called Mini LPX, which measures 10” x 8.5” (25.4 cm x 21.8 cm).
On LPX form factor the backplane connector is located in the middle of the motherboard and this connector looks like an expansion slot (female connector).
On NLX form factor the backplane connector is located on one of the motherboard edges and it is a 340-pin edge contact male connector, similar the one used by expansion boards.

Items that share a form factor are generally interchangeable, at least as far as their sizes and fits are concerned.
Note that although the names of the power supply form factors seem to be the same as those of motherboard form factors, the power supply form factor is more related to the system chassis (case) than the motherboard.
The next power supply form factor to gain popularity was the LPX style, also called the PS/2 type, Slimline, or slim style (see Figure 3.1).

Newer form factors such as NLX and ATX have the I/O ports mounted directly onto the motherboard in either a single or double row; cases designed for these form factors are sometimes equipped with exchangeable plates that match different port layouts, providing flexibility for changing motherboard designs.
The form factor describes the general layout of the case, the positioning of the slots in the back of the case, and the way that the case matches to the major components that fit into it.
The AT form factor was very popular in the late 1980s, and was the basis of many "clone" manufacturers' units (for compatibility with IBM.) The AT system was also the first to formally introduce different desktop and tower configurations.

LPX / Mini LPX Form Factor
One problem with the LPX form factor is that it is only a "pseudo-standard"; it was never formalized into a hard standard, the way for example ATX and NLX have been.
There is one innovation of the LPX form factor that has carried forward into the more modern designs: the use of integrated I/O connectors, and holes provided for them in the system case.
LPX cases are usually used with LPX form factor power supplies, which are sometimes called "slimline" supplies because LPX systems are often referred to by their "slimline" style.

What is the NLX form factor? - Knowledge Base
Form factor describes the physical size and shape of a computer device measured by outside dimensions.
A major difference between NLX and other form factors is that expansion boards are parallel to the motherboard, rather than perpendicular to it as in other form factors such as AT and ATX.
Since the NLX form factor is an actual standard, it should allow for greater interchangeability of components.

In response, Intel designed the ATX form factor to reverse the flow of air and move the power supply fan to the inside edge of the supply case, with the goal of using the power supply fan to also cool the CPU.
The form factor of the power supply must match that of the case that it is supposed to go into, and the motherboard it is to power.
The PC/XT was the first form factor to use the well-known pair of six-conductor motherboard connectors that were used through the Baby AT and LPX form factors, and the four-conductor disk drive connectors that are still used to this day.

There are several different form factors used for PC motherboards, the form factor refers to the physical size of the motherboard, and dictates what type of case the board will fit into.
These proprietary form factors, based on the original LPX, specified and originally developed by Western Digital back in 1987, do not have the standardised design and so tended to be the basis of cheaper or what I will term disposable PC's (not necessarily the case with Compaq).
This motherboard form factor has continued to be essentially the industry standard, since shortly after the release of Intel's 80286 processor almost to the present-day.

True Standard: The ATX form factor is a standard, as opposed to the "de facto standards" of prior form factors.
Also the power factor correction is usually done by placing a capacitive load in parallel with the inductive load of the PSU, So that the angle between the real power and reactive power is minimized.
For the ATX/NLX, SFX and WTX form factors, which provide +3.3 V power (as well as +5 V Standby power and potentially others), there is an added complication: there is a maximum rating for each of the +3.3 V and +5 V currents, but also a combined "+3.3 V / +5 V" rating.

The specification was very popular in the early-mid 90's, and briefly displaced the AT form factor as the most commonly used.
However, the release of the Pentium II in 1997 effectively consigned the format to death, as a good airflow was important in Pentium II systems, and LPX systems normally had a rather poor airflow.
The introduction of the AGP format was another blow, as the design not only increased the pincount on riser cards, but it limited most cards to one AGP, one PCI and one ISA slot, which was too restrictive for most users.

Therefore, adapting a standard LPX form factor supply to make it work properly in an ATX system, is difficult—if not impossible—even though the shapes of the power supplies themselves are virtually identical.
It seems that when Dell converted to the ATX motherboard form factor in mid-1996, it unfortunately defected from the newly released standard and began using specially modified Intel-supplied ATX motherboards with custom-wired power connectors.
