 PDP-11
The LSI-11 was the first PDP-11 model produced using large-scale integration; the entire CPU was contained on 4 LSI chips.
The daisy chain order established the order of the devices at that priority level.) In the case of the PDP-11 design, this meant that the interrupt grant order was determined by how close the physical hardware was to the CPU on the bus.
In the most radical departure from other, earlier computers, the PDP-11 had no dedicated bus for input/output ; it had only a memory bus.

It used the same bus as the PDP-11 (called the LSI-11 bus) but that was later rechristened the Q-Bus.
VAX stands for Virtual Address eXtension, and it is basically the PDP-11 architecture (16 bits) extended to 32 bits with support for paged virtual memory and twice as many registers.

 Production PDP-11 Models
This Q-bus processor was available in several versions, but they were all based on a new LSI implementation called the F-11 chip set.
It was based on the F11 chip set (aka PDP11/23), up to 3Mb of addressable memory and a hacked, menu driven version of RSX-11M called P/OS.
The processor used a Western Digital chip set that was microcoded for the PDP-11 base, extended (EIS) and optionally floating point (FIS) instruction sets.

Western Digital had a contract with DEC to supply chipsets for the DEC LSI-11 computer.
They disposed of the useless LSI-11 microcode ROMs and developed new microcode for the UCSD p-Machine instruction set (p-Code).
The UCSD p-System and UCSD Pascal were very popular at the time and Western Digital decided that there might be a market for a machine that ran the p-System as its native Operating System.

The Java Virtual Machine, by contrast, is not a complete operating system, and must be implemented in the context of an operating system such as UNIX, MacOS, Windows NT, or the unnamed operating systems running on Network Computers.
The UCSD p-System was also referred to as the UCSD Pascal System, but this name was misleading.

Because the basic instruction set of the LSI- 11 processor is that of the entire PDP-l1 family, the user has an extremely large range of compatible processing systems at his disposal.
Through the use of the LSI-l1 ASCII console, a central PDP-l1 system may initialize, load, and start up a remote LSI-l1 system over an asynchronous serial line or other link.
The information may then be used by a diagnostic program to probe the internal operation of the microlevel processor.

A contemporary of the PDP-11 is the data General Nova.
