Design a Neutrino Oscillation Experiment at   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The most attractive aspect of the LSND experiment is the full understanding of the neutrino flux and systematics of the experiment.
The physics goals of LSND are primarily directed towards searchers for neutrino oscillations in the decay-at-rest (DAR) and the decay-in-flight (DIF) channels.
The center of the LSND tank is located about 30 m downstream from the proton beam stop at an angle of approximately 12 with respect to the undeflected proton beam.

MiniBooNE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A neutrino beam consisting primarily of muon neutrinos is directed at a detector filled with 800 tons of mineral oil and lined with 1,280 photomultiplier tubes.
An excess of electron neutrino events in the detector would support the neutrino oscillation interpretation of the LSND result.
Recent data from the LSND experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory are controversial since they are not compatible with the oscillation parameters measured by other neutrino experiments in the framework of the Standard Model.

Evidence for Neutrino Oscillations from the LSND Experiment
The LSND detector consists of an approximately cylindrical tank 8.3 m long by 5.7 m in diameter.
The center of the detector is 30 m from the neutrino source.
These two searches have completely different backgrounds and systematic errors, and together they provide strong evidence that the observed event excesses are indeed due to neutrino oscillations.

LSND - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) was a scintillation counter at Los Alamos National Laboratory that measured the number of neutrinos being produced by an accelerator neutrino source.
The LSND project was created to look for evidence of neutrino oscillation, and its results conflict with the standard model expectation of only three neutrino flavors, when considered in the context of other solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments.
This controversial result will be tested by the MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab.

As expected, the dominating decay mode is proton emission (85%), but we also calculate a neutron-decay branch (5%), which stems mainly from the decay at very high excitation energies where, in our statistical model, the dominance of the proton decay over neutron decay due to the difference in thresholds becomes less important.
Thus, our calculation indicates that in the LSND experiment the number of neutron events should be slightly larger than twice the one for the nu_mu capture cross section.
In the LSND neutrino oscillation experiment the neutrino reactions on ^12C are only a small part of the background.

 UCR News: Neutrinos Have Mass
Indeed, Nobel laureate Frederick Reines described the neutrino as 'the most tiny quantity of reality ever imagined by a human being.' The most common form of matter in the universe, neutrinos are uncharged and, until recently, considered to be massless.
The LSND data suggest that 'muon anti-neutrinos' oscillate into 'electron anti-neutrinos,' and that neutrinos constitute approximately 1% of the universe's total mass.
Because scientists find it difficult to explain the solar, atmospheric and the LSND results using only the three flavors, the LSND results are controversial.

LSND tried to detect neutrino oscillations by generating neutrinos in one place and detecting them in another.
30meters away, the LSND a tank w/ 180tons of mineral oil and lined with 1220 light detectors is set to detect electron antineutrinos, which indicate that the muon antineutrinos have oscillated.
Some of the electron antineutrinos should combine with a proton in the oil to produce a positron and a neutron, the positron generates a trail of scintillation.

The LSND was an 8.3-m-long, 5.7-m-diam cylindrical tank that contained 167 tons of mineral oil with a dab of scintillating compound to amplify light signals used to reconstruct neutrino events.
The center of the LSND was 30 m from the neutrino source.
First results are expected by 2005, and if the LSND oscillation signal is confirmed, a BooNE detector will then be built at a different distance than the MiniBooNE detector to obtain the highest precision measurement of the oscillation parameters.

The LSND results, which will be published in Physical Review D on Dec. 1, are based on data collected at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center accelerator.
During the collection period from 1993-1998, LANSCE delivered 180 trillion-billion (180,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) protons to the LSND target, a tank filled with 167 tons of mineral oil (baby oil) and 14 pounds of organic scintillator.

Final LSND Neutrino Oscillation Results   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The LSND experiment ran for 6 years and observed excesses of events consistent with both \bar \nu_mu \rightarrow \bar \nu_e and \nu_mu \rightarrow \nu_e oscillations.
Results from the entire LSND data sample will be presented, which suggest that neutrino oscillations occur with a \Delta m^2 in the range 0.2-10 eV^2/c^4 and that at least one neutrino has a mass greater than 0.4 eV/c^2.
The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab is designed to be a definitive test of the LSND signal and will be capable of making precision measurements of the oscillation parameters.

Contriving to exclude all electron antineutrinos from the vicinity, the LSND researchers surmise that most electron antineutrinos that actually turn up in their detector must be coming from the transformation (oscillation) of a muon antineutrino.
The LSND team has now analyzed twice as much data as was contained in their publication of a year ago.
If neutrino oscillations were not occurring, one would expect to see 5 or 6 electron antineutrino scattering events, heralded by the creation of a positron and a neutron.

Explaining LSND by a decaying sterile neutrino
We propose an explanation of the LSND evidence for electron antineutrino appearance based on neutrino decay.
We introduce a heavy neutrino, which is produced in pion and muon decays because of a small mixing with muon neutrinos, and then decays into a scalar particle and a light neutrino, predominantly of the electron type.
Performing a fit to the LSND data as well as all relevant null-result experiments, we show that all data can be explained within this decay scenario.

 MiniBooNE Overview
The purpose of BooNE is to verify or refute the controversial results of a Los Alamos experiment, LSND (Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector), which indicated that electron and muon neutrinos have different masses and that these two types of neutrinos could oscillate back and forth between each other.
Second, the KARMEN in England examines a region similar to the LSND experiment, but sees no indications of neutrino oscillations.
If the LSND result is due to something other than neutrino oscillations, then MiniBooNE will prove that.
