Sandro Nielsen: Short annotated list of publications
The optimum legal translation dictionary should contain separate chapters (components) that deal with the different linguistic aspects of legal translation across cultures, and it is much more than just a book containing a list of legal terms in the source language and their translation into the target language.
The lingusitical approach to the dictionary as a concept operates with a subject matter, but the analysis reveals that it is not optimal to look at "the subject matter" of a dictionary within the existing theoretical, linguistically-based framework.
Instead a lexicographical approach is presented in which the dictionary is analysed as an object of investigation, and a new definition of the concept of dictionary is suggested.

Dictionary research Research is carried out on a variety of lexicographical and metalexicographical topics (such as the morphological and semantic properties of general and specialized vocabulary, its computer-assisted analysis and its treatment in various types of reference works) at some of the institutions mentioned above as well as at the Universities of Bordeaux and Limoges.
Dictionary production There are no bibliographies or figures on an apparently healthy market and vigorous competition among publishers of general (and English learners’) dictionaries (see Ilson 1990), slightly less in bilingual and technical dictionaries (for listings of specific dictionaries and dictionary types see the reference books OCELang 1992 and DDEE 1997).
Dictionary research Research into dictionary criticism and dictionary history is actively pursued (Marello 1996), but there are only few specialized centres: the Accademia della Crusca (which publishes the journal ‘Studi di lessicografia italiana’) and the CNR institutes Opera del Vocabolario in Florence and Linguistica Computazionale in Pisa.

The focus of preparing dictionaries for a particular subject-field should be the needs of its user group in specific situations.
This is catered for by the modern theory of dictionary functions and includes the introduction of subject-field components in dictionaries.
Dictionary functions are communication-orientated or cognition-orientated, and the lexicographers must identify the relevant functions and select and present the data so that the dictionary satisfies the needs of the users.

A dictionary would be even more powerful if the user could influence its behaviour: either quicker and more accurate - if the user is sure of the word he is looking for -, or capable to find similar words and spellings - in case of doubt.
As bilingual dictionaries are likely to be used by users who might have difficulties in producing special characters like accents or umlauts on their keyboards, they should either accept alternatives like combinations of characters or HTML-entities or be tolerant and, for example, consider "c" equivalent to "ç".
Bilingual dictionaries have to have a considerable size in order to save time to translators who, in most cases, will be looking for idioms or specialised terms.

Dictionary typology is in need of a major revision that takes into account new computer-mediated products, and these may in turn be studied and analysed according to agreed criteria.
It was also argued (by Tono) that the electronic dictionary interface may reduce difficulties posed by paper dictionary macrostructure, which seems to be the case for hand-held and CD dictionaries.
It is a fact that the availability of computer-mediated dictionaries has brought dictionaries back into the classroom and has given them a more outstanding role, especially in the case of language-learning computer packages.

Sandro Nielsen: Lexicographical Basis for an Electronic Bilingual Accounting Dictionary: Theoretical Considerations
The planned dictionary will be a practical tool designed to help Danish enterprises meet the ever-increasing need to make their financial reporting in linguistically and terminologically correct English, for the benefit of stakeholders.
The dictionary is designed for Danish users, and the factual information is intended to make the user familiar with the meaning of the lemmata in appropriate accounting contexts and to explicitly specify any difference between the lemma and its equivalent in terms of meaning and usage.
The other three LSP dictionaries are not accounting dictionaries proper, but multi-field dictionaries that intend to cover all or many of the fields in the business sector, for instance, computing, graphics, human resources, law, manufacturing, politics and statistics, with a limited coverage of each subject field as a result.

Each domain LSP, although embedded firmly in the general language of the community, the so-called Language for General Purposes (LGP), comprises not only idiosyncratic words and phrases - the terms - but also the preferred use of certain syntactic constructs and restricted semantics.
The attributes of a given term vary again: in conventional print dictionaries a term headword may be accompanied by definition, grammatical category, bibliographic refrence and possibly illustrative usage; in a typical term bank there may be as few as 40 attributes or as many as 76.
These statistics are based on the typical contents of a LSP dictionary or the number of terms in a term bank:
