  LSU Band History
The cadet corps and military programs at LSU were also highly respected, particularly by the nation’s armed forces leaders.When Louisiana’s famous populist Governor Huey P. Long took a personal interest in the LSU Band in the early 1930's, major changes began to take place that set the band on a unique course toward national prominence.
The band department was established as a component of the LSU School of Music, one of the few in the south at that time.
And in 2002 the LSU Tiger Marching Band received the Sudler Trophy, the "Heisman Trophy of college marching bands," as they were voted the best college marching band in the country.

  Bands
The LSU Wind Ensemble is the select concert organization of the LSU Band Department, and is comprised of the finest wind and percussion students in the School of Music, primarily graduate students and upperclassmen.
The Symphonic Band is the Band Department's largest concert organization and is composed of musicians from all schools and departments within the University.
Students who enter LSU in the summer immediately after graduation from high school must have a 2.0 cumulative average by the conclusion of the summer term in order to be eligible for Tiger Band.

The Sudler Trophy is the highest honor a collegiate marching band can receive and has been called "the Heisman Trophy of marching bands," according to Frank Wickes, director of LSU bands.
Wickes said that the band was notified that it had won the award in December at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, but the official presentation has been scheduled for the Sept. 14 football game and will coincide with LSU's Band Alumni Day.
In 1997,the band was selected as the top band in the Southeastern Conference by SEC band directors.

Appointed to the LSU music faculty in 1985, Dr. Moorhouse conducts the LSU Symphonic Winds, and is Co-Director of the LSU Tiger Marching Band, where she serves as the primary instructor, overseeing administrative activities in addition to drill and show design.
Dr. Moorhouse is a past recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from the LSU School of Music, as well as, the Scroll of Excellence, Silver Baton and International Golden Rose awards from the Women Band Directors International.
Outside LSU, Dr. Moorhouse maintains an active schedule having appeared as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout the United States, and in Japan, Western Europe and Canada.

For the first twenty five years of its existence, the band members split their time (albeit not evenly) between their studies, their military drill, the band, and the athletic events they were required to play at (including baseball games, which eventually released the band from their duties).
Upon seeing the small Georgia band against the massive LSU band, movements among the alumni and athletic association began to fund and equip the band with more instruments and members.
While the Tech band was known as the “yellow-jacketed band,” the reporter found it necessary to dub UGA’s band as “the red-coated band.” The name stuck and by the time Roger and Phyllis arrived, the University of Georgia Dixie Redcoat Band was formed.

Snee graduated from LSU in 1916 and attained the rank of lieutenant in World War I, serving with the 156th Infantry, Third Division, and the 55th Infantry, Seventh Division of the American Expeditionary Forces.

I was in the band in the early 80's, and back then, the band room was too damn old.
The band hall is old and in disrepair and is too small to house a 300+ member band.
During alumni band practice this year, Wickes spoke for several minutes on the topic and seemed hopeful that full or partial funding from the athletic department is on the way.
