Topic: LSWR S15 class

  Encyclopedia: Swanage Railway
On September 8 a brand new Virgin Trains Class 220 "Voyager" diesel multiple unit, no. 220018, became the first mainline train to use the new track when it made a special journey for a ceremony where it was named Dorset Voyager and began its first passenger journey.
The Class 08 locomotive was the standard BR diesel-electric shunter, based on the LMS 12033 series (now TOPS Class 11) and was the most numerous of all classes in the UK, numbering 1193 when construction ceased in 1962.
CLASS 14 An order for 26 0-6-0 650 hp diesel-hydraulic locomotives was placed in January 1963, these to be built at British Railways Swindon Works.

It was rebuilt to a simple "Renown" Class with two inside cylinders in August 1919 and became LMS No 5157 in 1923 although the new number was not applied until January 1928.

The list does not include classes of locomotives that were completely withdrawn from service before 1960, "foreign" locomotives that ran on the Southern region during the 1960s, nor locomotive classes introduced after nationalization.
The number in class column lists both the number originally built (or rebuilt) followed by the number still in service at the start of 1960.
Where a class is a rebuild of a previous class the CME who built the class on which the rebuild was based is shown first (in italics).

Designed for the LSWR's inner suburban network, these locomotives were displaced by electrification, and the entire class were scrapped by 1927 with the exception of two which were retained to operate the Lyme Regis branch, where sharp curvature made the use of anything other than this class of loco impossible.
This class of locomotives, of which this was the final locomotive to be built, were essentially a goods version of the King Arthur class of express passenger locos (N15).
It is retained because it is the only one of the three to belong to the railway, and the strong links between the class and the line, but relegated to a long-term restoration objective, thanks to the presence on the line of restored 80064 and 80151.

See letter from Keith Horne (page 542) who objects to civil engineers being alleged to be off their trolleys, as presumably implied by Williams, and to the changes made in calculating bridge stresses in 1921, and that the railways at that were "beginning to creak" as "at present".

He was one of a small group of model railway enthusiasts in the Taunton area in the 1970s who introduced me to the merits of modelling the LSWR.
Also, for purist LSWR fans there is likely to be very little of contemporary interest as most cine footage dates from post 1960, long after the disappearance of the majority of South Western stock, even if the lineside still held interest.
That said, I found Volume 1 to be largely true to my stereotype image, but with the advantage of it being on the LSWR, Volume 2 to be better than expected whilst Volumes 3 and 4 were thoroughly enjoyable - made better by the well-informed narrative.

The Swanage Railway's first crew to operate S15 Class E828 Harry A. Frith on a Passenger-hauling train to Corfe Castle and Norden Park and Ride have nothing but praise for the veteran locomotive and its team of dedicated restorers.
The S15s like E828 - BR number 30828 from 1948 to 1964 - were the freight versions of the Southern Railway's popular and efficient King Arthur class 4-6-0 locomotives that hauled its express passenger trains across the south and west of England.
But the real praise for E828's performance on the Swanage Railway came from Mike Jackman who used to be a cleaner and fireman for BR at its Bricklayers Arms depot in South London from 1947 to 1956.

E850 was the first of the "LN" class, popularly known as the "Lord Nelson" class or just "Nelsons".
The Nelsons were almost unique in Britain by having their crank axles set at 135°, to give eight softer "puffs" per revolution of the driving wheels rather than four heavy ones and therefore produce a more even "pull" on the fire.
In trials, Lemaître fitted 863 performed best and its modifications were cheaper so it became standard for the class, all of which were modified by early 1940.

Not only that, but by then the new Southern CME, Maunsell, had built his King Arthur class of 4-6-0s, based on the LSWR Urie N15.
Several of his King Arthurs had been drafted to front-line duty on the Brighton, including the prestigious 'Southern Belle'.
Behind each locomotive was a used Urie-style 8-wheel tender, taken from a Urie S15, in one of the regular tender swaps that the Southern so loved.
