The N15 class were 2-cylinder 4-6-0 passenger engines with 6 foot 7 inch (200.66 cm) driving wheels.
They were usually called the ‘King Arthur’; class (or simply ‘Arthurs’) as they all carried names from the Round Table legends.
The first two batches were designed by Robert W. Urie, and built in two batches each of 10 engines by the London and South Western Railway’s Eastleigh Works in 1918–19 and 1922–23.

The Southern Railway Class LN or Lord Nelson Class is a class of steam locomotive.
The Southern Railway Class N15X 4-6-0 steam locomotives were dimensionally rather similar to the Class N15 King Arthur locomotives of the same wheel layout, but had a rather different history.
Preserved number C1 The Southern Railway Class Q1 is a class of steam locomotive and represents the ultimate development of the British 0-6-0 freight engine.

It was rebuilt to Class D3 in September 1920, and became LNER 3400 Class D3 in May 1925; 2115 in August 1946.
From either a Class 5 2-6-0, LMS 13100-13107; 2800-2807 from 1934; or from a Class 4F 0-6-0, LMS 4447-4456 or 4507-4556.
It was renumbered 86502 Class 86/5 in June 1988; 86222 Class 86/2 in October 1989, and the nameplates were removed in November 1994.

This fine set was carried by the GWR '4900 Hall' Class 4-6-0 built at Swindon in July 1933 under Lot 281 at a cost of £4,149 but a further £2,190 for her tender which had originally been built for 4938 "Albert Hall" in 1931.
A small class, being a reboilered version of the 16C Pacific which was itself a variant of the 16 Class with combustion chamber.
In May 1945 it went to Doncaster for rebuilding to Class A1/1, when the original, curved, cast brass nameplates (of which this is one) were removed and it was refitted with straight nameplates applied to the wind-shields.

 Urie/Maunsell N15 "King Arthur" class 4-6-0
This was one of the names later conferred on one of the Southern Region's BR Standard Class 5 locos.
In view of the Southern's connections with the West Country and the class' association with West of England expresses the N15 class was named after personalities and places associated with the King Arthur and the Round Table Legend.
S15s, the Schools class (which received their six wheeled tenders) and with the Lord Nelson class (some lost their newer flat sided bogie tenders and received an earlier Urie version).

 Bluebell Railway - Locomotives on Static Display   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Designed for the LSWR's inner suburban network, these locomotives were displaced by electrification, and the entire class were scrapped by 1927 with the exception of two which were retained to operate the Lyme Regis branch, where sharp curvature made the use of anything other than this class of loco impossible.
This class of locomotives, of which this was the final locomotive to be built, were essentially a goods version of the King Arthur class of express passenger locos (N15).
It is retained because it is the only one of the three to belong to the railway, and the strong links between the class and the line, but relegated to a long-term restoration objective, thanks to the presence on the line of restored 80064 and 80151.

It became LNER 3215, Class J51/2, from November 1925; was reclassified J50/1 in February 1931; and was renumbered 8914 from May 1946; BR 68914 from August 1950.
It became LNER Class B2 No. 5424 in March 1924, was reclassified B19 from August 1945, and was finally withdrawn in November 1945.
It became LNER 5949 Class J11/1 from December 1925, was superheated in February 1944 and reclassified J 11/4, and was renumbered 4447 in August 1946.

It became LNER 8814 Class D15 in 1924; was rebuilt to Class D15/2 in May 1931, and again to Class D16/3 in August 1939.
Built as Class 14A, it was rebuilt with a bigger boiler to Class 14R in the 1930’s.
As carried by the LMS Class 8F 2-8-0, LMS 8539, that went on loan to the LNER from September 1945 to April 1947, when it went to the LMS, eventually becoming BR 48539.

British Rail completed construction of the 'West Country' and 'Merchant Navy' locomotive designs, but did not build any further orders.
It abandoned the 'Leader' class experiments, and Bulleid left the UK to carry forward his unusual locomotive designs in Ireland.
Withdrawal of ex-SR locomotives happened mainly towards the end of steam on the Southern Region (in 1967), the pre-Grouping designs having gone before then as electrification continued to spread across the region.
