LULAC was formed in 1929 in Corpus Christi, Texas, by the merger of three Mexican American civic organizations: the Corpus Christi chapter of the Order Sons of America, the Order Knights of America of San Antonio, Texas, and the League of Latin American Citizens of South Texas.
LULAC has worked consistently and effectively in advocating equal opportunity for Hispanics in government, law, education, and business.

The board action was with the stipulation that LULAC would have input on the proposal to be introduced in the 1999 regular legislation session, they said.

Since 1932 LULAC Councils have been selling tacos, tamales, having dances, etc., to raise monies for scholarships that are given to Hispanic students meeting certain guidelines.
As part of LULAC’s education efforts, the LULAC National Scholarship Fund (LNSF) was established in 1975 to provide scholarships to Hispanic students attending colleges and universities.
LNSF is administered by the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, Inc., a non-profit educational organization established by LULAC to provide educational programs for Hispanics and other youth.

LULAC also "opposes the privatization of Social Security and any tax cut plan that would compromise its future stability" as well as "time limits on welfare."
"LULAC believes that all textbooks should reflect the Hispanic community in a positive way and should be language appropriate and culturally sensitive." Coverage of Aztec religious practices or the Alamo in a history textbook might be problematic.

The members of the council were mentors who opened unbelievable professional opportunities for me. It seemed that LULAC members were everywhere in our community helping to elevate the quality of life of Latinos in need.
I maintain that each LULAC member deserves respect and should have his or her voice heard.
No matter what goes on within LULAC, we have always managed to survive because the LULAC Constitution was crafted carefully and was patterned after our nation's Constitution, which guarantees equality and due process for all.

Ladies LULAC was founded in 1933 at the statewide annual LULAC convention in Del Rio, when the League "permitted Latin American women to organize on the same basis as men." Ladies LULAC chapters replaced "ladies' auxiliaries," which had functioned since 1932 in San Antonio, Kingsville, and Alice.
The Ladies LULAC structure approximated the officer structure of the men's councils, though the secretive rituals at men's meetings in the early years may not have been duplicated by women.
In 1933 LULAC established the position "ladies organizer general," the official organizer of women's chapters, which existed at least until 1942 but was not revived after World War II.
