  Lurch - LoveToKnow 1911
In (1) "lurch" is the name of a game, of which nothing is known (it is supposed to have resembled backgammon), and also of a state of the score in various games, in which the loser either scores nothing or is beaten by very heavy points.
In (2) "lurch" occurs first in the form "lee-lurches," sudden rolls a ship takes to leeward in a heavy sea, which may be a corruption of "leelatch," defined in Smyth's Sailor's Word Book as dropping to leeward of the course.
In (3) "lurch" is probably another form of "lurk," to lie in wait for, watch stealthily, hence to pilfer, steal.

The theory goes that jilted brides would be 'left in the lych (or lurch)' when the errant bridegroom failed to appear.

Lurch can also find these cycles, and when doing so assumes that any local state beginning with a pound sign represents progress (note: in older version of Lurch, progress states were marked with a plus sign, but this caused problems for the parser in the current protype GUI version).

Lurch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Lurch looks for violations of the same kind of properties a model checker (e.g., Gerard Holzmann's SPIN model checker) could be used to verify Unlike a model checker, however, Lurch uses a partial, random search of the space of system behaviors.
Lurch generally requires much less memory than a model checker, and often property violations are found faster, although Lurch's speed varies from one run to the next.
On the other hand, Lurch does not perform an exhaustive search of the space of system behaviors, so Lurch should be thought of as a supplement, not a substitute, for model checking where there is enough time and memory for both.
