The third university in the Americas, the University of San Carlos, was founded in Antigua in 1676, and the city attracted a total of 16 religious orders, which built their own monasteries, convents and churches.
Antigua is best known for its lovely colonial ruins, the remains of churches, monasteries and convents destroyed by earthquakes that plagued the Spanish colony.
Antigua's graceful Central Park, with a mermaid fountain in its center, is bounded by the Palacio de los Capitanes, built in 1549 and reconstructed in 1735, the Municipal building, which dates to 1743, and the Cathedral, constructed from 1543 to 1680.
