De la Bourdonnais is of noble family, being grandson to that Governor of the Mauritius, immortalized by St. Pierre in Paul and Virginia.
La Bourdonnais inherited a small paternal estate; but, I regret to say, that this was devoured by some unfortunate building speculations at St. Maloe's.
The habits of De la Bourdonnais over the board are, indeed, the very reverse of what would be expected from so profound a thinker; but he appears to be divided into two existences, -- the one of which does the chess, the other the fun.

 DE LA BOURDONNAIS AND KIESERITZKY
The two games between De la Bourdonnais and Kieseritzky, that we have given in our September and October numbers, will recall to the minds of our reader too vividly the loss that the Chess circles of Europe sustained when those distinguished players were taken from us by the irreversible stroke of death.
De la Bourdonnais, succeeding to the throne of his predecessor, Des Chapelles, raised the renown of French Chess to a higher pitch than it had reached even during the legitimate reigns of Legalle, the half-British Philidor and Verdoni, or during the short-lived usurpation of Mouret, the regent of Automaton.
Kieseritzky, although not by birth a Frenchman, was one of the ablest successors whom De la Bourdonnais, with his instinctive prescience of genius, raised up during his life, as worthy at a future time to maintain the excellence of Chess in France, and with it of Chess throughout the whole of Europe.

Louis Charles Mahe de la Bourdonnais (1795-1840)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In my opinion, de la Bourdonnais (1797-1840) was, by far, the world’s strongest player from about 1821 to the time of his death (this is remarkable since he only learned how to play in 1814, and he didn’t study the game seriously until 1818).
A pupil of the incredibly strong Frenchman Deschapelles (1780-1847), de la Bourdonnais eventually became so skilled that he dominated all other players from his own country and, as a result, was forced to visit England in an effort to prove his superiority over everyone else, too.
While most players of that time were pure tacticians and attackers, de la Bourdonnais understood positional chess and played excellent endgames (of course, he could also go after an opponent’s King with the same zeal as everyone else!).
