LA GATTA CENERENTOLA - HISTORY AND ORIGINS
In an alternative Neapolitan variant Cenerentola appears as a fine-feathered hen belonging to a washerwoman, and each night sheds her feathers to go to the ball with the prince.
In this context Cenerentola becomes the typical female figure as conceived in patriarchy - she is the "virgin", the negative victory of patriarchy over matriarchy.
Furthermore, the scene of Cenerentola's dancing with the king is equivalent to the encounter with Saint Paul in the tarantella exorcism.

Vivica Genaux hasn't been singing long enough for the whole world to recognize it, but she is one of the greatest singers of our day.

Rarely do voices with such weight come to roles such as this, which are loaded with quick, tricky ornaments and aerobatic coloratura tangents.

Jacopo Ferretti, Rossini's librettist for La Cenerentola (premiered in 1817), based his version on an earlier and long forgotten French opera from several years earlier (not to be confused with Massenet's Cendrillon of 1899).
The essence of the story remains, with much of the magical fantasy deleted--no fairy godmother, no pumpkins turned to coaches, and, instead of the glass slipper, a more realistic matching bracelet for the prince to identify the mysterious beauty for whom he has fallen.

Piccinni's work is often cited as a milestone in the development of opera buffa, and it was a source of inspiration for many other works: the latest of them (before Cenerentola) was Stefano Pavesi's Agatina, o La virtù premiata (Milan, 1814), on a libretto by Francesco Fiorini.
The substantial differences from Perrault's fairy tale, as well as the popularity of Isouard's competing version of the same subject, led the French critics to be negatively disposed.

La Cenerentola makes virtuoso musical demands in the romantic lead roles of Angelina (Cinderella) and the Prince, and it calls for carefully controlled comic skills in the supporting cast, particularly the mean stepfather and stepsisters and the valet, Dandini, who masquerades as the Prince through most of the plot.
The sisters are deftly portrayed by Angela Denning and Daphne Evangelistos.
A special elegance associated with the Salzburg Festival is well-exemplified in all aspects of this Cenerentola, including Mauro Pagano's staging, Michael Hampe's directing, and Riccardo Chailly's conducting of the great Vienna Philharmonic.
