In La Fanciulla, besides expressing his countrymen's fascination with the rising power and innocence of America, Puccini was trying out complex orchestrations and harmonies highly unsuggestive of cowgirls.
She did not hesitate to push the ensemble to its limits; she was not afraid to run roughshod over Puccini when that meant moving along the action (this is a western, after all, and the first act drags).
Though Del Monaco was removed as director here (after reportedly throwing a tantrum, and a bottle at the member of the crew, late last season), his replacements - Vera Calabria and Elena Kalabakos - have carried on without a hitch.

La Fanciulla del West: opera in 3 acts, libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini, based on the play 'The Girl of the Golden West' by David Belasco, music by Giacomo Puccini, first performed 10th December 1910 at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, with the following cast:
It stayed on his mind, and in the summer of that year, after his London friend Sybil Seligman had the play translated into Italian for him, he decided that this would have to be the subject for his next opera.
Fanciulla's score is Puccini's most progressive, most modern music, that much is true, and for some listeners it may take two or three hearings to fully appreciate its beauty and exciting innovation.

Fanciulla was scheduled for an American premiere, and Puccini sailed for New York in November, 1910, to arrive in time to spend two weeks preparing the cast for their roles.

La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West) is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini, based on the play The Girl of the Golden West by David Belasco.
Belasco, playwright for Madam Butterfly had also written The Girl of the Gold West, and Puccini selected that drama for his next opera.
It was first performed on 10 December 1910 in New York City at the Metropolitan Opera House with Emmy Destinn as Minnie, Caruso as Dick Johnson and Pasquale Amato as Jack Rance; Arturo Toscanini conducted the premiere.

 LA FANCIULLA DEL WEST
When Puccini went to America in 1907 to attend the rehearsals and premières of his four operas at the Metropolitan Opera, he was looking for a new subject for his next opera and took the opportunity to see several plays while staying in New York, including three by David Belasco.
The history of the West impressed him, and after his friend Sybil Seligman had translated the play into Italian, he decided to use it as the basis for his new opera.
The music of "La Fanciulla del West" is the most progressive and most modern that Puccini had written.

While any Puccini opera was greeted with some degree of honor, La Fanciulla del West’s harmonic complexity and unresolved chords left much of the audience scratching its head.
Nonetheless, this recording has several strengths, not the least of which is Placido Domingo singing at the height of his powers, hitting high Bb in chapter 4 of Act 3 with both passion and precision.
La Fanciulla del West is a wonderful opera that deserves better treatment.

The fruits of this artistic freedom include the semi-operetta La rondine, the trilogy of contrasting one-acters Il trittico, and the depiction of the California gold rush, La fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West).
La fanciulla was ideal material for Puccini in this mood.
Perhaps because it does not conform to the stereotypes established by his earlier works, La fanciulla has never been one of Puccini's most popular operas, despite its many innovations.

You wouldn't expect too much of an entrance from someone called Minnie, but, at the sound of gunshots, Puccini's "girl of the golden West" sweeps into the Polka Saloon to a thrilling deployment of one of the composer's most sumptuous tunes.
But there's only one Minnie - a woman alone in a world of men - and Puccini, that most natural of all musical dramatists, made certain that her entrance would be one we'd remember.
And yet La Fanciulla del West has always been the big sleeper among Puccini operas.

After the successes of La Bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly, Puccini strengthened his resolve to make La fanciulla del West a different kind of opera from which all elements of sweetness would be ruthlessly expunged.
Although the melodies in The Girl of the Golden West are not so immediately appealing (no interruptions for applause are heard in this performance), nevertheless the opera has plenty of harmonic and instrumental innovations and plenty of action to sustain interest.
Ravel perceptively recognised that here was a work in which Puccini had put the orchestra in the role of the protagonist; and one might note that the sound-world of Debussy rather than Richard Strauss is sometimes evoked in this opera.

mondo marion: La Fanciulla del West
La Fanciulla del West, which had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910, may be Puccini's greatest opera: a dark, harmonically daring score that was extolled by such avatars of modernity as Anton Webern.
Still, Fanciulla (the title translates as "The Girl of the Golden West") has never become a repertory staple, owing, some say, to its creaky Western cliches and ostensible lack of pretty tunes.
Yes, the lovers ride off into the sunset, but the opera begins and ends with loss: the homesickness of Minnie's barflies, Minnie and Dick's sorrowful leave-taking, and the miners' anguished farewell to their darling girl.

But there is at least one alternative: Puccini’s deliciously exotic opera La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West), set in the “Cloudy Mountains” of gold-rush California.
Set in England’s West Country around 1760, the plot deftly crosses Poe with Pirandello to create a horror tale steeped in irony and a skewed perception of reality.
Under David Schweizer’s direction, the cast is led by Brandon Jovanovich as Boconnion, the renegade soldier who perpetrates the crime; Beth Clayton as Rosalind, his mistreated paramour; and Caroline Worra as Jenny, the troupe’s leading actress and principal plague carrier.

The California Gold Rush provides the dramatic backdrop for Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, also known as "The Girl of the Golden West." Minnie, the only woman in a mining camp, is idolized by the lonely and homesick miners.
Although La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, and Tosca were already world-famous successes, Puccini considered this his best work, and the vivid orchestration and sweeping vocal writing confirm his judgement.
La Fanciulla del West is one of his most compelling and evocative operas.
