Il Belgio ebbe una principale colonia in Africa durante la sua storia: il Congo, che venne dato a Re Leopoldo II con la Conferenza di Berlino del 1885.
Bruxelles, la capitale, è principalmente francofona, ma ufficialmente bilingue in quanto si evolse da luogo a maggioranza di lingua olandese, quando il Belgio divenne uno stato indipendente nel 1830, all'attuale predominanza francofona in quanto capitale dell'amministrazione centrale dello stato federale.
