DOUBLE FRENCH VICTORY AT LA BAULE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The previous day, the endurance brought back all its team members in good form and in a record time, finishing on the beach of La Baule at the end of the 160 kilometre race.
Germany, runners-up with Ludger Beerbaum and Gladdys (number one in the world) and Marcus Ehning and For Pleasure, (recent winner of the World Cup final) found themselves facing a team of steel,of whom three were faultless in the second round.
"The public in La Baule is very ´horsey´ and well understand that our objective is the European Championships this summer and the Olympic Games next year, and that saving a round in the Nations´ Cup,at the highest level, is very important from this point of view," explained Gilles de Balanda.

Samsung Super League - Vive La France!!! - Equi.Net Magazine May 2003
Taking the lead with just four faults after round 1, the French added nothing more to their score and their final rider, Gilles Bertran de Balanda did not have to jump a second time as they stormed to victory on their home soil.
It was a tense and nervous opening competition, with riders very much aware that a good performance was vital if their country is to stay within the top-eight show jumping nations in the world.
Relegation was far from French minds yesterday however as, in front of their home crowd, Michel Hecart (Quilano de Kalvarie) and Gilles de Balanda (Crocus Graverie) jumped clear over the 12-fence first-round track.

 The riders
One can seriously confirm that the vast majority of these will be present at La Baule, except in cases where a particular horse may not be available for health or other reasons.
In this case, we are thinking of Alexandra LEDERMANN, European Champion in 1999 who, at La Baule, will still be without her glorious partner ROCHET M, who is still convalescing following an injury last autumn.
In any case, she will have the opportunity of competing with her new recruit, the beautiful mare CIGALE DU TAILLIS - winners of the Geneva Grand Prix last December, and the only French couple placed (5th) in the Grand Prix Jump CCF at Paris-Bercy in March.

Leading in equal first place at the end of round one, Switzerland and Italy were finally overtaken by some bold riding from Belgium, whose victory promoted them into equal third place, alongside the USA, in the team rankings.
On this occasion, an incident at the water ditch in the first round saw Eric Navet bail out when Atout d'Isigny, who was fortunately unharmed, slammed on the brakes and skidded underneath the rails on his haunches.
Accompanied by more bad luck in the second round, when Gilles de Balanda was obliged to withdraw Crocus Graverie with colic, the team had to be satisfied with sixth place, but retain their lead in the rankings.
