La Guaira was established as Venezuela 's main port in 1589.
The topography where La Guaira is situated (a thin piece of land between the mountains and the sea) was the less indicated to apply the usual colonial urban layout.
The city centre of La Guaira is historically and morphologically related with the port activities.

thanks...it's around 20 miles from Macuto to downtown Caracas...I think......wonder if they are using the old city centre Airport now since they say the trip from La Guaira can take 3 hours.....slightly more than the Miami-Caracas flight
