On the 30 July 1967 the La Mama theatre opened in Carlton, Melbourne.
The theatre was the brainchild of Tim's then wife Betty Burstall and was modelled on the "off-off-Broadway" theatre of the same name in New York City.
The theatre gained considerable notoreity in 1969 when Alex Buzo's controversial play Norm and Ahmed premiered there, leading to the arrest and charging of several of the actors by the Victorian ViceSquad for the use of 'obscene' language.

 Tony Le Nguyen (Tony Lee)
Tony studied video production at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1988 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, at the Victoria University of Technology, majoring in Drama and Community Development.
Between 1986 and 1988, he toured with Handspan Theatre's, A Change of Face, a play written by Andrea Lemon, directed by Camelina di Guliamo.
This was one of the first large-scale community theatre projects, which involves over fifty Vietnamese-Australian living in and around the Western suburbs of Sydney.

Twenty-five years after its first performance at the old Pram Factory (now long gone) Stephen Sewell's 'Traitors' has been revived - almost next door - at Melbourne’s La Mama theatre.
The play, which established the young Sewell as a political dramatist, is set in revolutionary Russia at that extraordinary and tragic time when Stalin and his henchmen took over the Communist Party, purging from his totalitarian regime any idealists or dissenters, dubbing them traitors.
The director of this production, Melanie Beddie, saw 'Traitors' when it was produced in Sydney after its 1979 Pram Factory debut, and she talks to Julie Copeland about the contemporary resonances of 'Traitors' and the strength of Sewell's writing.

Barnesy, The Harbour and You has had two month-long seasons at the Darlinghurst Theatre, in July-August 2003 and January 2004.
It will be done at La Mama in Melbourne in late 2004.
