Department in northwest Bolivia; area 134,173 sq km/51,804 sq mi; population (2000 est) 2,406,400.
The eastern provinces of La Paz, which spread into the tropical highlands on the eastern slopes of the Cordillera Réal, support a far greater variety of crops and fruit, including wheat, tobacco, peaches, grapes, citrus fruits, bananas, and cacao.
An extensive plateau forms the northern portion of the department of La Paz, while the southern part is crossed by the two ranges of the Andes; between these two areas is the altiplano (high plateau region).

La Paz is one of our favorite Mexican cities, and we've visited many times on two or four wheels.
On the way back to the boat we stopped off at the Teatro de la Ciudad, an impressive theater seating 1,000 where we plan to attend a symphony concert on the 20th, and bought some groceries at the CCC, one of the larger supermarkets.
We also visited the mission, which was built around 1720 (La Paz was founded in 1533 by Cortez), and found a Ham radio shop where we talked to the owners (in my halting Spanish).
