Kinoeye | Austrian film: Michael Haneke's Funny Games
Michael Haneke's La Pianiste (The Piano Teacher, 2001) is a work of contemporary horror, its sensibility rooted less in genre (although this is relevant) than in a line of US and European cinema locating mental breakdown and social disorder precisely at the heart of Western bourgeois patriarchal civilization.
La Pianiste's horror is within its understanding that mental illness flows axiomatically from commonly held assumptions about this life, conceived as an immutable, irreducible standard.
La Pianiste is a summary statement on the collapse of gender relations in late capitalist civilization, while interrogating critically Raymond Williams' notion of the residual, figured in the greatness of Europe's cultural past.

The mother personifies Jellinek's perception of her native Austria as a country that deceptively and perversely encourages racist/fascist behavior, sexual and emotional repression, and, let's say, übermensch ideals which are impossible to keep today without the danger of a mental breakdown.
"La Pianiste" also deals with a very powerful and delicate issue: how dangerous it is to reveal your innermost fantasies to the one (you think) you love.
The novel also includes long passages about Kohut's childhood and adolescence so you kind of understand how she turned into who she is now, but these are not in the film, which makes each of us wonder how she got to be that way (don't we all know a Erika Kohut out there?).

But in Michael Haneke's harrowing La Pianiste (The Piano Teacher), this milieu is but a thin veneer papering over a much darker side of the human heart.
In La Pianiste, the story involves a neurotic woman (played by the inestimable Isabelle Huppert) who coolly indoctrinates students in the art of Schubert when she's not visiting hardcore peep booths or slitting herself with a razor.
At times you tend to sympathize compassionately, but at others your sensibilities are repulsed by the murky nastiness of her actions and unsettled by her psychological instabilities.

Provoking cheers and boos and netting three awards at Cannes in May, La Pianiste tells the story of Erika Kohut, a Viennese piano teacher.
Throughout the beginning of the film, the character is presented to us as an icy and emotionless individual – the only flashes of passion appearing during the arguments with her domineering and possessive mother, with whom Kohut, although in her early forties, still lives.

This is a French film – La Pianiste, and, unlike the wonderful ‘Brotherhood of the Wolf’ and ‘Amelie’ this goes away from the fantasy-side of French film-making back into the grim pessimistic reality that some French film-makers unfortunately feel themselves obliged to inflict on the rest of us.
This film is no holds barred, though to my mind it does not quite live up to its hype as the shockingly graphic film it is supposed to be.

I think the reason "The Piano Teacher" was released in English speaking countries under that title, rather than as "The Pianist" (its title in French) was because "The Pianist" by Roman Polanski was released around the same time.
