 Queen Margot (1994)
This stunning French movie tells the story of the Massacre of St. Bartholomew, a slaying of Protestants on August 24, 1572, and is based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas père.
To salvage the country, the young Margot de Valois (Isabelle Adjani), who is sister to the Catholic King Charles IX, is arranged to be married to King Henri of Navarre, a Huguenot and a Protestant.
Naturally Margot is not in love with Henri, she is in love with La Môle (Vincent Pérez), her "doomed lover" (aren't they all?).

 La Reine Margot
In an attempt to bring peace to the country, the king's sister Margot is married to the Protestant leader Henri de Navarre.
Throughout the whole of the movie, the director gives a marvelously vibrant life to his depiction of the world of the late Sixteenth Century by never allowing himself to idealize that era.
Consequently, while neither Margot nor Henri, with whom the narrative is primarily concerned, is a particularly sympathetic character, both are such fascinating and carefully crafted individuals and inhabit such a remarkably well realized universe that they are able to captivate the viewer.

The story behind Queen Margot: Open a history book to some of the more bloody, dramatic times in the seemingly endless European religious upheal and front-and-center is the The Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre of France, when the Reformation spread into one of the "pillars" of Catholicism.
Bodies fill the cobblestone streets surrounding the church where Queen Margot is wed, and as she runs through the corridors of court she passes bodies slain, herself covered in blood.
Margot has a somewhat odd relationship with her brothers, her mother, and her "friends." But its captivating, while lacking depth in some areas due to its reliance on sex and sexuality to pull it out of slumps.

As the film opens in 1572, an arranged wedding is taking place between Margot (Isabelle Adjani) and Henri of Navarre (Daniel Auteuil), officially an attempt to reconcile the two factions and bring the people together as one.
Margot is not exactly delighted about this forced union, and makes sure Henri knows about it.
With the movie dominating the disc, there’s precious little room for extras (and it’s highly likely that none were available anyway).

(Margot steps out to look for her lover and appears to be wandering through ranks of male models.) The movie lacks a commanding performance at its heart; the actors weep and strut, but none of them can match Chereau's passion.
Margot, who initially dislikes her husband and is known for her wantonness, does make a pact with him to be his ally.
Margot spends most of the film trying to keep her mother and brothers in check and her husband safe, while satisfying herself with La Mole.

La Reine Margot/Queen Margot feels like that old joke about starting with an earthquake and building up to a climax.
La Reine Margot tells the story of the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre and of the final days of Charles IX of France.
Similarly, Isabelle Adjani is perfect as Margot, the beautiful Catholic princess who rescues a Protestant soldier from the massacre, only to fall in love with him, to the horror of her family.

Queen Margot deals with the events leading to the change of royal dynasties from the degenerate Valois to the more vigorous and adaptive (at least in the 16th and 17th Centuries) Bourbons.
Accordingly, I would recommend that before watching Queen Margot a viewer spend 10 minutes in an encyclopedia and becoming familiar with the characters, particularly Admiral Coligny, Catherine de Medici (the Queen Mother), the Duc de Guise and Charles IX.
In "Queen Margot", regarding to the St. Bartholomew´s Day Massacre (24th August 1572) the insanity seized whole groups of peoples: The catholics slaughter the Protestant Huguenots.

Revisiting this film several years (and too many movies to remember) later it reveals to me another side.
Queen Margot is truly a cinematic experience and now we have a fine DVD version available locally so more people can see this remarkable film.

In-between, Bregovic also provided the soundtrack to French director Patrice Chéreau's 1994 movie La Reine Margot, featuring a collaboration with Israeli singer Ofra Haza, which, like Underground, won the Palme D'Or at Cannes.
Having put live performance on hold since before the break-up of Bijelo Dugme, Bregovic returned to the stage in grand style in 1995, playing concerts in Greece and Sweden backed by ten traditional musicians, a 50-strong choir and a symphony orchestra.

However when Queen Margot goes to see his body after his execution, we can see both legs and neither has any wound above the knee (or anywhere else).
Since he was shot with 1570\'s pistols there should have been a visible wound from the ball shot.
