Straddling the Utah-Colorado border and spanning Grand and San Juan counties in Utah, the large laccolith called the La Sal Mountains dominates the view of the surrounding canyonlands.
They named the La Sals the Five Mountains, though it is not clear to which of the many peaks they were referring.
The towns of Old La Sal and Coyote also sprang at the base of the mountain range because of its water and location on the southern Colorado-Utah mail route.

 LA SAL CANYONS WILDERNESS
The La Sals are a "laccolithic" mountain range formed when molten volcanic rock, rising under great pressure from deep within the earth, uplifted the surface of the land into a group of huge domes.
The rugged landscape which surrounds the La Sal mountain range is cut off from the outside world by the Colorado River on the north, the Dolores River on the east, and by the cliff walls of Spanish Valley on the west.
Hiking and camping are excellent on the grassy benches with expansive vistas across the Dolores Triangle to the north, of the La Sal Mountains in the south, and to Colorado's Uncompahgre Plateau in the east.

La Sal Pass can be reached from the west via a high clearance four wheel drive road.

The La Sal means "The Salt" in Spanish and the mountains were named by the Dominguez/Escalante Expedition in 1776.
Tomasaki is also within the Manti-La Sal National Forest of the La Sal Mountains and is near the southern border of Grand County and within a few miles of the Colorado state border.
The La Sals are typicially colder (due to higher elevations), wetter, and recieve quite a bit more snow than the Abajo Mountains, but this is the closest data available.

Moab is the county seat of Grand County and a regional center of southeastern Utah.
It is located near the east bank of the Colorado River on the west side of the 12,500-foot-high La Sal Mountains in a valley fifteen miles long and three miles wide within the heart of the Colorado Plateau.
Although some mining was done along the Colorado River and in the La Sal Mountains, Moab's economy was based on farming, ranching, and fruit growing until the uranium boom of the early 1950s brought in scores of prospectors, miners, workers, and speculators, increasing the population of Moab from 1,275 in 1950 to 4,682 in 1960.

Mount Tukuhnikivatz (Tuk) is west, Talking Mountain is north, and Mount Peale is northeast.
Hike to it along the long ridge which connects Peale and Mellenthin, the highest mountain north (at least in southern part of La Sals) of Peale and about two miles away.
