La Santisima Trinidad de Paraná - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Santisima Trinidad de Paraná, or the Holy Trinity of Paraná is the name of a former Jesuit mission in Paraguay.
La Santisima Trinidad de Paraná, often referred to by the locals as simply the "ruins of Trinidad" was one of the last of the Jesuit reducciones to be build in the Parana River area encompassing southern Paraguay and northern Argentina.
Located near the modern day city of Encarnación, Trinidad was originally constructed in 1706, the intended self-sufficient city came complete with a central meeting plaza, a large church meetinghouse, a school, several workshops, a museum and housing for the local Indian population.

 La Santisima Trinidad de Paraná
The Holy Trinity of Parana was one of the last Reducciones (reductions or townships) built by Jesuit led communities of Guaranís in what was possibly the most interesting social experiment conducted during the European colonization of the Americas.
Motivated by their desire to both convert and protect the native populations of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, the Jesuit (Society of Jesus) Missionaries created these small cities as a place of shelter, worship, education and commerce that operated independently of the secular colonial governments.
La Santisima Trinidad de Paraná, more commonly referred to as “the ruins of Trinidad,” was one of the last settlements built (1706) and so is one the best preserved.

They were an important force in the Counter-Reformation and in the Catholic missions, in part because their relatively loose structure (without the requirements of living in community, saying the divine office together, etc.) allowed them to be flexible to meet the needs of the people at the time.

 Jesuit Reductions
The Jesuit Reductions were a particular version of the general Spanish colonial strategy of building reductions (reducciones de indios) in order to "civilise" and catechise the native populations of South America.
They were created by the Catholic order of the Jesuits in the Tupi-Guarani areas of Portuguese Brazil and Spanish America and became famous for their resistance to enslavement and the absolute dominion of Crown representatives, which led to their ultimate repression and the expulsion of Jesuits from the Portuguese Empire.
