La Scala was originally illuminated with eighty-four oil lamps mounted on the palcoscenico and another thousand in the rest of theater.
The theatre was closed for renovation from 19 January 2002 to November 2004 on a project by the Ticinese architect Mario Botta.

The world famous La Scala theatre in Milan is to close for a three-year renovation period on the 31st of December.
La Scala will reopen its doors in December 2004 with the same opera that was performed at its inauguration in 1774 - Antonio Salieri's L'Europa riconosciuta.
During the renovation, events will be transferred to the Bicocca Theatre in the Milan suburbs, starting with Verdi's La Traviata on the 19th of January next.
