In a move that will see La Trobe University establish a major presence in Melbourne's CBD, a new City Campus is to be created within the walls of the historic Argus Building.
Conveniently located on the corner of Elizabeth and La Trobe Streets, the campus expresses a new vision for the University and is due for completion in 2009.

In 1847, at Limeburners’ Point near Geelong, Victoria, Charles La Trobe, a keen geologist, was examining the shells from a lime kiln when a worker showed him the Geelong keys, a set of five keys that he claimed to have found.
La Trobe concluded that the keys were dropped onto the beach around three centuries ago.

 Governor La Trobe
In 1854 La Trobe was to be replaced, and his wife Sophie returned to Switzerland due to illness while Charles awaited the arrival of Governor Hotham.
Along with Hotham, La Trobe must be considered one of the major contributors to the conditions that led to the Eureka Stockade uprising.
Before he died, La Trobe recognised the importance to the colony of a number of the documents in his possession and sent them back to Melbourne where they became the nucleus of an important historical collection now known as the La Trobe Library collection.

Market Street is one of the north-south streets in the central business district of Melbourne, Australia, part of the Hoddle Grid laid out in 1837.
Market Street is the only major deviation to the Hoddle Grid, in that it only runs between Flinders Street and Collins Street, such that its vista is terminated by the art-deco Temple Court building on Collins Street.
The street was named after the Western Market, Melbourne's first official fresh food and vegetable market, which operated on the site now occupied by the AXA (formerly National Mutual) office building, on the block occupied by Collins, Market and William Streets, and Flinders Lane.
