La Union had undergone through many socio-political and economic-cultural experiences such as the colonization of the tree imperial powers, that of Spain (1521 - 1898), United States (1898-1946), and Japan (1941-1945), the two world wars, the 1986 EDSA revolt, and the recent millennium anniversary.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union -- Around 38 fishermen were rescued by joint air and sea rescue operatives in South China sea but more than 50 others are still missing in a sea tragedy in the La Union province on Friday, police reported Sunday.
Senior Supt. Samue Diciano, director of the La Union Provincial Police Office, also reported that the dead bodies of the two fishermen who were found floating off the South China sea were already brought back to their hometowns.
Last Saturday, villagers of Balaoan, La Union, discovered the lifeless body of a fishermen and later learned he was one of the fatalities of the sudden squall in La Union province.

The fishermen, who were on board the fishing boat MV Emmanuel, were fishing along the coast of Zambales when huge waves spawned by Weng battered their boat, causing it to capsize.
