La Valse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
La Valse, une poème choréographique was written by Maurice Ravel in February 1919-1920, after Ravel's return from World War I.
In 1911, he had premiered his Valses nobles et sentimentales, reflecting the changed meaning of the waltz, and indeed, the changed society of twentieth century Europe.
Ravel completely revamped his idea of the graceful piece into La Valse, une poème choréographique, but this time, with malice, transformed it to demonstrate the demise of Austrian and German culture that led up to the War because of the neglect of the noblemen and wealthy aristocrats for their countries and its citizens.

Balanchine died in 1983, leaving behind "La Valse" as just one of numerous examples of his genius; his way of marrying movement with music in a way that seemed so right, you couldn't imagine one without the other.
Last week, I watched a rehearsal of "La Valse" in a PNB rehearsal studio, performed by a cast in sweatpants and torn T-shirts and punctuated by quiet buzzes of conversation.

[Ravel - La Valse] notes by Paul Serotsky   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
However, it was only after the War that, prompted by Diaghilev, he wrote La Valse, a work with one foot solidly planted in the old world, and the other shifting uncertainly in the quicksand of the new, an extraordinary and bizarre reflection of his turmoil.
Ravel had an orchestral technique of unparalleled refinement, always aiming for crystalline clarity of texture, although you might not think so when you hear this work's murky beginning: it is like a mist, dissipating, gradually revealing a magnificent crowded ballroom (Ravel's own description).
I recall especially the final scene of the film of The Masque of the Red Death, where the revellers in the castle, believing themselves safe from the plague without, celebrate with increasing abandon - only to find their dance is directed by the figure of Death, moving among them.

Classy Classical: Maurice Ravel's La Valse
He had intended to compose the piece many years prior to this date, but what he ended up writing was his Valses nobles et sentimentales.
Ravel returned to his concept of a Viennese waltz, however, this time he called it La Valse, a piece that now took on a more sinister and grotesque form than the whimsical idea he once had for it.
Shortly after the composition of La Valse, Diaghilev requested a four-hand reduction of the piece for piano.

Ma mère l'oye (Mother Goose), originally for piano duet, was orchestrated and used for a ballet, as were the Valses nobles et sentimentales and the choreographic poem La valse.
His music for the piano includes compositions in his own nostalgic archaic style, such as the Pavane and the Menuet antique, as well as the more complex textures of pieces such as Jeux d'eau (Fountains), Miroirs and Gaspard de la nuit, with its sinister connotations.

I found the juxtaposition of ballets in this mixed bill rather ill-balanced, to the detriment of its overall effect.
