Five years later, La gazza ladra was his 22nd opera and his 61st composition.
La gazza ladra, or The Thieving Magpie, is one of the last of his "comic" works--and its tale is one that is more tragic than humorous.
It was based on a true incident, well-known to Rossini's audiences, in which a French servant girl was executed as a thief, only to be exonerated after her death when it was discovered a magpie had stolen the items she had been accused of taking.

Rossini: La Gazza Ladra Overture - Excerpt 1
Gioachino Rossini's Overture to his opera La Gazza Ladra (translated into English, loosely, as "The Thieving Magpie") is a difficult but rewarding piece for the bass trombonist.
Rossini wrote the opera for a small opera house which had a small pit for the orchestra, hence, he scored the opera for a small orchestra which includes a single trombone.
La Gazza Ladra suffers from having many poor and mangled editions of the work available.

All the elements are familiar: a chorus of chattering villagers praising the beauty and goodness of a favored member of the community, a young lady in love who expresses her feelings of joy through florid melodies, a handsome young man whom she admires and who loves her in return, and a worried father.
We seem to be in the world of Rossini's La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) and Bellini's La sonnambula (The Sleepwalker), the world of opera semiseria or semi-serious opera.
So, in La gazza ladra we have the return of both Ninetta's father (a soldier who has deserted his regiment) and of her beloved Giannetto (son of her master); in La sonnambula it is the arrival of Count Rodolfo that changes Amina's innocent sleepwalking into a serious threat to the tranquility of all their lives.

 Saint Louis Symphony
Stendahl, the French writer who would soon publish his famous biography of the composer, wrote to an acquaintance that “Rossini has done five operas that he always copies; La gazza ladra is an attempt to break out of the circle.” Perhaps because of this, the composer lavished particular care on La gazza ladra.
Indeed, La gazza ladra boasts perhaps the finest of Rossini’s operatic preludes, one that is typical of such pieces and yet distinctive.
Like virtually all of the composer’s overtures, it opens with a broad introduction, though the pronounced martial character of this section, emphasized by the dramatic snare drum rolls that frame it, is unusual and striking.

The Thieving Magpie was the second of three operas Rossini completed in 1817, and it received its first performance in May at La Scala, Milan.
The opera may be described as a melodrama cum comedy, and the long cast list includes a talking magpie, whose utterances initiate the plot whereby a serving girl is accused of stealing a silver spoon and whose cause isn't helped by her father being accused, in his turn, of desertion from the army.

This opera is known as ´The Thieving Magpie´ in English, and they probably should have used that title for this edition, since ´La Gazza Ladra´ sounds to English speakers like a stomach ailment.
The brilliant, rousing overture is well-known; Kubrick used it to great effect in one of the fight scenes in ´A Clockwork Orange.´; The opera itself, however, is little-known and rarely-performed, which is why this German television production from the eighties may be the only chance you´ll get to see it in full staging.
Nevertheless, this disk makes for an entertaining three hours and will be worth its modest price to those who like to delve into the farther corners of the operatic repertoire.

 Rossini - Thieving Magpie Overture
La Gazza Ladra, aka Diebische Elster, aka Thieving Magpie is an example of a phrase that is difficult because the 3rd finger, once pushed down, is hard to lift back up, especially if the 2nd and 4th fingers are held still.
Lesson: when lifting the 3rd finger in La Gazza Ladra, allow the 2nd finger to lift freely as well.
LA GAZA seems to defy any sensible possibilities even when utilizing 7th harmonics.
