Opera Today : “La Muette de Portici” : a small revolt in Ghent
On the 25th of August 1830 a performance of La Muette de Portici was going on at De Muntschouwburg (though at the time most called it Théatre de la Monnaie).
The new masters didn’t want to be reminded of the true origins of the revolt and they much preferred and encouraged the myth that the singing of the duet “Amour sacré de la patrie” made the revolution happen.
La Muette was not given in the opera but in the concert auditorium of the Bijloke, a magnificent medieval abbey in the heart of Ghent.

 Daniel-François-Esprit Auber
In La Muette de Portici, familiarly known as Masaniello, Auber achieved his greatest musical triumph.
The duet, "Amour sacré de la patrie", was welcomed like a new Marseillaise; sung by Nourrit at Brussels to 1830, it became the signal for the revolution which broke out there.
One of Auber's latest compositions was a march, written for the opening of the International Exhibition in London in 1862.

Long neglected by opera scholarship, Auber's 1828 opera La Muette de Portici has recently reemerged as a focal point for examinations of issues such as voice, vocality, body, and gesture in opera.
Indeed, the Spanish theorist Tom*s de Sancta Maria advocated that students should use musical themes learned from the masters, such as those appearing in the vihuela prints, in creating their own works.

Arias from Carmen and La Muette de Portici, sung in French, are stilted; arias from Aida and Andrea Chenier, sung in German, are awkward, with a particularly disconcerting end to the Verdi: "Holde Aida" (Celeste Aida).
Arias from Pagliacci, Othello, Turandot, La Boheme, Andrea Chenier and La Gioconda, all sung in Italian, hardly represent Öhmann at his best—he sounds decidedly uncomfortable.
It isn't thatÖhmann isn't a fine singer—repertory must be right for him, and most of what is on this CD isn't, although it is good to have mementos of his Wagner.
