La rondine @ The Lowry, Salford Quays: opera review
Despite being a product of his maturity - it was written years after his most popular three operas - Puccini's La rondine (The Swallow) continues to be marginalised, and it is by far his most underrated opera.
Puccini was a huge fan of Lehár, it is true, and originally he was commissioned to write songs or arias for an operetta for performance in Vienna.
After struggling with the gruelling 'Doretta's Aria' that challenges all sopranos in the opening minutes of the opera, Kelly relaxed, and by the atmospheric second act she was singing with a gloriously full tone and tastefully controlled portamento.

  mondo marion: La rondine
La rondine, Puccini's heady, dance-infused 1915 opera, may be the weakest of his works set in the City of Lights.
Like Verdi's La traviata, La rondine ("The Swallow") is the story of a kept woman (Magda) who finds true love with a young man from the provinces (Ruggero), but abandons their idyll when her sordid past comes back to haunt her.
La rondine, though, lacks the moral outrage that animates Verdi's masterpiece and the ever-fresh exuberance of La bohème.

 La Rondine - Giacomo Puccini
La Rondine is the only opera among Puccini's mature works that is generally passed over in the current repertory--and with good reason.
Placed in fin de siecle Paris, the plot is disconcertingly similar to that of Verdi's La Traviata which is set two centuries earlier.
Magda, a courtesan, falls in love with Ruggero, a handsome young man of good family, parts from her wealthy lover and leaves Paris to live with Ruggero in the south of France.

The Dallas Opera - La Rondine
La Rondine (“The Swallow”) is a poignant romance filled with unexpected moments of genuine passion and heartbreak.
Although not as well known as La bohème or Turandot, La Rondine is a treasure trove of luminous melodies, one of which, “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta,” figured prominently in the award-winning soundtrack for Merchant-Ivory’s 1986 film masterpiece, A Room with a View.
Conversation Starter: Puccini famously described himself as “a mighty hunter of wild fowl, opera librettos and attractive women.” He combines all three in La Rondine.

"La Rondine" is an irresistible melange of Franz Lehar, Richard Strauss and the Puccini of "La Boheme" or "Tosca."  Guardian | La Rondine
La Rondine is something of an oddity among Puccini's works and many critics, deeming it slight, have dismissed it as inferior to the rest of his output.
Much is made in the programme of its similarities to Arthur Schnitzler's plays - though a more useful comparison would be with the operas of Richard Strauss, Puccini's arch-rival, whose territory he was perhaps trying to invade.
Like Der Rosenkavalier, La Rondine deals with the corrosive effects of time and truth on the relationship between an older, worldly woman and a younger, emotionally naive man.

This is, of course, the basic story of Verdi's La traviata — but Puccini explored similar terrain in his 1917 opera La rondine ("The Swallow"), which opens tomorrow night at The Dallas Opera.
Puccini may well have gotten the more credible ending: rather than letting loose a powerful high note and then dying of tuberculosis, La rondine's heroine simply takes a wistful leave of her beloved, acknowledging that she can be a lover but never a wife.

Whether one regards Rondine as an oddity, or, on the other hand, as an underrated masterpiece, hardly anyone can deny that, at least at one point in the show, Puccini achieves one of the most arresting moments in all operatic literature.
The war ended a year and a half after the debut of La rondine; the opera landed on a respectable spot in the second tier of the operatic repertoire, not one of the all-time hits but definitely presentable.
Worse horrors than the "War to End All Wars" were yet to come; many members of the audience for the premiere of La rondine would live to see even greater bloodshed and terror than that which had rumbled in the distance on the night that Magda, Prunier, and Ruggero first appeared on the stage.
