The director for La Sonnambula was the estimable Mario Lanfranchi, who exhibits an imaginative artistic creativity that is always consistent with the intentions of the composer and librettist.

I don't think it was wise of La Stupenda to record Amina so late in her career, especially since her earlier recording was so good and still sounds fine.
It would be foolish to pretend that she still sounds young and fresh, she doesn't, and in spite of her devotion (which I admire) to these marvelous Bel Canto operas, the pleasure she gives is very limited.
Bellini's LA SONNAMBULA was one of the most popular operas of the 19th century and is still staged when the right performers are available, which sadly isn't all that often.

La sonnambula again finds her capturing the subtlest elegances of nuance and phrasing, so that the coloratura is not merely an outward show of technique; it is always subordinated to a sense of inner feeling.
What I object to is the way it gives La sonnambula a knowing quality at odds with Bellini's simple, sentimental melodramma.
By failing to show Amina in a compromising position - she is found asleep not in the Count's bedroom, but on the floor of the all-purpose ballroom - Marelli removes the motivation for Elvino's misunderstandings.

One of the most important opera composers of the early 19th century, Bellini was a master of the bel canto style, and one of the most popular composers of his time.
His much-studied and frequently-performed opera La Sonnambula is particularly admired for the simplicity and economy of its orchestration and the inspired lyricism of the vocal writing.
Scored for three solo singers, chorus, and orchestra, this work displays all the qualities that make Berlioz popular with audiences, conductors, and performers: brilliant and innovative orchestration, lyric and dramatic vocal writing, and magnificent choruses.
