Opera Carolina: Pagliacci / La Vida Breve

De Falla's reliance on offstage atmospherics a la Cavalleria Rusticana and the stasis of what action there is reveal his theatrical inexperience, and make La vida breve a very hard act to pull off in the theatre.

PlaybillArts: Features: The Vagaries of Spanish Nationalism
Despite its Spanish subject matter, however, La vida breve also proves Falla's assimilation of cosmopolitan styles; indeed, it was his constant looking across the Pyrenees that sometimes caused his compatriots to dismiss his works as insufficiently Spanish.
La vida breve includes verismo passages akin to Mascagni or Leoncavallo, the harmonic language of French music, and the occasional foray into counterpoint, as in the song of the forge workers, who, like a Greek chorus, intermittently sing of the inscrutability of fate.
There, La vida breve proved his calling card: many French musicians, including Claude Debussy, were instantly impressed with it and encouraged him to seek a performance at the Opéra-Comique.

Until recently, scientists believed Lake Vida in Antarctica was a solid block of ice, frozen from top to bottom.
Lake Vida, more than 5 km long, is one of the largest in the cold Antarctic desert region known as the McMurdo Dry Valleys.
NASA is interested in the research because the Lake Vida ecosystem provides useful lessons for launching Martian ice probes that may one day yield frozen microbes.

And while he was a proud musical nationalist who may have done more than anyone to explore Hispanic folk influence within a classical compositional framework, he is unquestionably in the late-romantic mainstream and the common ground he shares with composers from Wagner to Bartok is striking.
La Vida Breve is a short (about an hour) opera that employs numerous sounds and themes from the Spanish flamenco style of folk music.
La Vida Breve is structurally as delicate as a butterfly, and it runs a great gamut of breathtaking soundscapes from sombre orchestral interludes to mighty choral anthems to dance tunes to folksong.

I have delayed writing this review for some time because, never having seen the opera, I was hoping to catch up with a rare UK production being toured by England’s Opera North.
I am not sure which version is more politically correct, but I fear, life being what it is, that La Vida Breve is more convincing in its outcome, and certainly more painful for the audience.
This Naxos CD is a very welcome addition to the few recordings that have been made.

Sound Recordings Review--Falla: La Vida Breve   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
In the long operatic chronicle of fine musical scores handicapped by dramatically naive, feebly structured plots and badly written librettos, La vida breve unfortunately ranks high—all the more surprisingly, as Carlos Fernandez Shaw was an immensely experienced playwright and poet.
La vida breve is all but a one-woman opera for the wronged Salud, the other characters, besides being the merest pasteboard, having very little to do; but in this passionate, high-flying role Berganza, who in 1978 was in her prime, is splendid.
She projects a real sense of character, adopting where necessary the hard timbre indicated by the composer ("to be sung in the style of Andalusian songs") and generally rivetting the attention.

Giménez's La tempranica, to whom de Falla and his Salud owe so much, is a much more finished theatrical achievement, though the older composer barely approaches the power of de Falla's Forge music, the visceral choral interjections in the Intermedio, the breathtaking sweep and colour of the wedding Danza.
For all the character's dominance, recordings of La vida breve do not stand or fall thereon, and Sanchez tailors her opulent, Straussian vocal coat to de Falla's cloth sensitively enough, though not without some spreading above the stave.
Graham Wade supplies a good note and synopsis, but the copywriters make Baquerizo a tenor rather than the bass-baritone he is, and the presence of vocal cues in English suggests that there wasn't enough booklet space for a parallel translation to accompany the Spanish text.

It says a lot for La vida breve that it was able, from its opening bars, to banish my ill-temper at having endured Revueltas, and to establish a mood of potent, eloquent sadness and menace.
They are so selfconsciously downtrodden that one of them raises his voice in weary lament: `Wretched is he born to be an anvil rather than a hammer!' and his colleagues all agree.
In verismo we are invited to submerge ourselves in the fate of ordinary suffering people, but in La vida breve we contemplate a story so commonplace that it achieves archetypal status forthwith.

Of the remaining items, La Vida Breve, the Seven Popular Spanish Songs, and the two additional vocal works Soneto a Córdoba and Psyché, are all classics, the finest versions available.
In La Vida Breve, aided by Frühbeck's exactly similar approach (how he cuts loose in the big ensembles!), the result offers pathos without making the admittedly slender story ridiculous or overly sentimental.
The only reservation concerns El amor brujo, whose songs really do seem to require a bit more blood and guts than either Los Angeles or Giulini seem able to provide, for all the lovely playing in the purely orchestral Pantomime.

 Dicapo Opera Theatre
Manhattan's Dicapo Opera Theatre went off the beaten path again in December with the Iberian answer to Cavalleria Rusticana, Manuel de Falla's early (1905) La Vida Breve (The Short Life), in its first fully-staged performances here in over forty years.
La Vida Breve has sub-minimal action, while El Retablo del Maese Pedro and Atlantida pose virtually impossible staging demands.
La Vida Breve could likewise be successfully performed in either of those ways, for the fact is that, except for the incidental dances (one ultra-familiar from pops concerts), this is less a conventional opera than a concert in costume.
