		During the time north Florida and the coastal areas were attracting newcomers the Caloosahatchee valley leading into the mysterious interior was closed to all but the adventurous.
		The original City of LaBelle was platted by Captain Hendry who built first at Fort Thompson to the east, then, in 1914, built a house in town on the river.
		Although the river was LaBelle's blessing, it was also its bane, frequently overflowing during rainy season when the narrow course couldn't drain the deluge of water and backed it up, inundating the city.
