  New Georgia Encyclopedia: LaGrange College
LaGrange College evolved from the LaGrange Female Academy, chartered by the Georgia legislature on December 26, 1831.
Although Wesleyan College in Macon (originally Georgia Female College), chartered in 1836, was the first in the state authorized to grant degrees, LaGrange College has the prior date of origin as an educational institution for women.
LaGrange Female Academy opened for instruction in 1832, with Thomas Stanley, a Methodist clergyman, serving as its principal.

LaGrange college was founded in 1830, and the University of North Alabama, in Florence, considers LaGrange as its predecessor - so this year, UNA is celebrating its 175th year.
There weren't many inhabitants of LaGrange when Union Colonel Florence M. Cornyn and his "Destroying Angels" of the 10th Missouri cavalry burned and destroyed the college on April 18, 1863 (here is an eyewitness account).

Funded by the Callaway Foundation, it is a modern three-story building with facilities for LaGrange College's art and design department and two floors of galleries devoted to the college's art collections and exhibition program.
Dodd grew up in LaGrange and received his first formal training in art at the college, at the time a women's college.

This morning the LaGrange College Board of Trustees was shown a redesigned rendition of the school’s mascot, the Panther; moments later, shirts emblazoned with the new official trademark were being offered for sale in the College’s bookstore.
