Community colleges are curious phenomena, simultaneously assailed and admired for their audacity in challenging the conventional college model.
Indeed, the practices of community colleges, once considered unconventional, now permeate the entire academic structure as career-oriented curricula and work internships proliferate, as developmental education (often camouflaged) infuses liberal education, as controversies over nontraditional students rage, and as pressures to diversify pedagogy mount.
LaGuardia was the third college and the first community college in the country to make work internships a degree requirement.

NCRVE MDS-1046 - LAGUARDIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
When LaGuardia Community College was established in 1971, its first president established a culture of innovation and experimentation that, according to faculty and administrators, has persisted to this day.
The spirit of innovation was also a vision of what a community college might be, since this institution was relatively unfettered by any long history of institutional orthodoxy or regulatory imperatives.
In other ways, however, LaGuardia is the epitome of a community college, particularly in the composition of its students and its embodiment of the "people's college." The variety of races, languages, and ages at LaGuardia is almost overwhelming, even for two observers from California accustomed to great variation in community college students.

Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count is a national initiative to help more community college students succeed, particularly students of color and low-income students.
The University of Texas-Austin's Community College Survey of Student Engagement (www.ccsse.org), funded in part by a Lumina Foundation grant, helps institutions evaluate their performance with students based on five benchmarks: active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student-faculty interaction and support for learning.
"LaGuardia really did remarkably well on several of those benchmarks and does it in a context that is challenging: the proportion of U.S. students who were born in another country, for whom English is not the first language, who have other challenges related to poverty and the like," CCSSE director Kay McClenney says.
