LaPorte County prepares for life as ozone non-attainment zone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Based on computer modeling, if IDEM can demonstrate that LaPorte County may attain the eight-hour ozone standard by 2007, the county may be designated as a marginal rather than moderate non-attainment area, according to Easterly.
Some of the requirements of a marginal area are already in place in LaPorte County, said Easterly, and if it is an independent non-attainment zone, its ability to be redesignated to attainment won’t be dependent on any other area, unlike Lake and Porter counties.
An additional consideration is if it becomes part of the Chicago ozone non-attainment area, LaPorte County later may be designated with that area as non-attainment for tougher particulate matter standards soon to be implemented and be required to implement controls that might not make a big impact there, Easterly added.
