June 28th, 2004: At the 1st of July De Rijke and the Italian Paganella Group opens together a logistic centre in Laakdal.
The preference is given to Laakdal, nearby the Petrochemical industry of Tessenderlo.
Laakdal Logistcs will mainly serve as a buffer stock for the flow of goods which can not be processed directly by the factories of our customer.But Laakdal will also serve new local customers.
In 1995 Laakdal fraternized with Jurbarkas, a city in Lithuania.
Afterwards more camps were organized in the field of culture and sports in Laakdal as well as in Jurbarkas.
Between the delegation and ELE (Europe in Laakdal in Europe), a non-profit association, which follows up the fraternization and which is supported by local authority subsidies, the question rose whether the youth council of Laakdal could not establish relations with this council in Jurbarkas.
It soon became clear that a cooperation with the sister town council of Laakdal, Jurbarkas, was possible and also very evident.
In august 2000 we went with a delegation of the youth council and the ELE (the organization that supports the contacts between Jurbarkas and Laakdal) to Jurbarkas to take a look at how the situation was in Jurbarkas with regard to the organization of youngsters.
Starting from this knowledge we began brainstorming at our arrival about how we could give the youngsters in Jurbarkas a possibility to organize themselves in a youth association or rather in an organization in which they could keep themselves busy in a meaningful way in a fixed and regular structure.
Bruno De Lille (Brussel), Ingrid Pira (Mortsel) en Patrik Vankrunkelsven (Laakdal) will join an impressive international delegation of mayors at the start of the NPT conference in New York where they will talk about the “2020 Vision”.
As a result there are now 196 Belgian members of Mayors for Peace, which is a huge increase from 52 in March 2005, and 6 last year.
Patrik Vankrunkelsven, senator and VLD mayor in Laakdal stated that the international community must focus on its own standards if it wants any credibility.
