Lab color space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CIE 1976 L*a*b* is based directly on the CIE 1931 XYZ color space as an attempt to linearize the perceptibility of color differences, using the color difference metric described by the MacAdam ellipse.
To convert between RGB and L*a*b for example, it is necessary to determine or assume an absolute color space for the RGB data, such as sRGB or Adobe RGB.
The Lab color model has been created to serve as a device independent, absolute model to be used as a reference.

Proposal for a Standard Color Space for the Internet
Color management is a term that describes a technology that translates the colors of an object (images, graphics or text) from their current color space to the color space of the output devices like monitors, printers, ….
Since the image is in a known color space and the profile for that color space would ship with the OS and browser, this enables the end users to enjoy the benefits of color management without the overhead of larger files.
If no color space is indicated by the author, the User Agent (UA) should interpret this as "no color correction" and continue to render as it does now.

A color is said to be "out of gamut" when its position in one device's color space cannot be directly translated into another device's color space.

The disadvantage is that lab has lots of colors outside cmyk gamut, and also outside rgb so if you like very bright colors and you pick them from lab mode you might use colors both screen and cmyk can't display.
I sometimes use the lab color section of photoshop's big color circle, exactly for the reason you said, that it's easy to make a color a bit greener/redder or bluer/yellower than messing with cmyk values.

Perceptual is going to be the better choice when a large portion of colors from the source space are going to get clipped, as more compression is required to “fit” all of the colors in the target space and still maintain smooth tonal gradations.
RC is best when only a small portion of colors from the source space will get clipped as the slight compression to the out-of-gamut colors is acceptable and the main body of colors is kept relatively intact.
The downside is that every image would have a different color space.

 What is CIE 1976 (L* a* b*) colour space?
These notes are principally concerned with the latter known as CIE 1976 (L* a* b*) colour space or CIELAB.
In fact in 1976 the CIE specified two colour spaces; one of these was intended for use with self-luminous colours and the other was intended for use with surface colours.
The need for a uniform colour space led to a number of non-linear transformations of the CIE 1931 XYZ space and finally resulted in the specification of one of these transformations as the CIE 1976 (L* a* b*) colour space.

If you are minding every last little bit of color change, be aware that changing color space introduces rounding errors in color values (and the error is more severe in 8-bit images than in 16-bit images).
If you aren’t using color profiles for all of your equipment and attempting to maintain color matching between acquisition and print, sharpening using only the luminosity data is probably overkill, though, as any miscalibration between your monitor and printer likely produces a bigger shift.
The reason for using a technique like this is that sharpening colored edges means that the Unsharp Mask uses the color data to determine how to modify the edge.
